I'm new to meds, just this week, and made a dumb mistake. The past 2 days, I've taken 12.5mg Zoloft for anxiety in the a.m. and 100 mg Trazdone for sleep in the evening. I also took Zoloft Wed a.m.
I'm embarrassed to say, but this evening, when I should've taken the Trazodone, I took another dose of Zoloft! I didn't realize it until nearly 2 hours later. I counted out the Trazodone prescription and realized that I did not take them yet today!
I online chatted with 24/7 Walgreen's pharmacist and he said fine to take the Trazodone now too and to message my doctor about tomorrow's Zoloft dose. Could be they will want to count the mistaken does as tomorrow's dose.
Feeling the trazodone effects now and I have to say, I'm a bit nervous about going to sleep with both of these in me. UGH! I feel SO dumb. I had been on the phone, and due to anxiety and severe sleep deprivation I just wasn't thinking. I'll never do that again!
Please tell me that I'm not the only one to do something so dumb? Has anyone else taken these together or anything similar.

I’ve never used Zoloft but I overdosed on celexa years ago. I took something like 4 pills at once, like 160 mg. I experienced a bit of psychosis for like one day then I was fine. Not sure how Zoloft compares. If you only took an extra pill or two, I doubt anything bad will happen. I’m betting he’ll just recommend you continue with your regular dose. But best to let your doctor know. If you feel out of control, get to an emergency room just to be safe.
I also take trazodone. I’m over 200 lbs man and 100 mg’s is too much for me. 50 mg helps me sleep and if I take 100 Mg I have memory problems the next day, although I’m not aware of any negative reactions with ssri’s. It’s most definitely not a lethal dose of trazodone so don’t worry about that. Just be safe tomorrow, don’t drive and like I said said go to emergency if you feel you need to. My guess is you might have short term memory problems due to both but it will go away. That’s my experience
By no means are you the only one who has done this.
It's good you reached out to the pharmacist. I'm glad to hear that. Today let your MD know.
Find a routine with your meds and a safe plan
Pill box
Mark bottles on top AM/PM
Put Bottles in different locations.
Just a few suggestions. Find what works for you.
As mentioned pay attention to your body and if you need emergency services never hesitate to use them.
Take care of yourself
It happens. We get side tracked, in a hurry, etc.
I know your desperately seeking sleep from reading your other posts. I was on trazodone for 3 years, much lower dose at 50 mg, the 100 mg was way too much next day impairment, brain fog, etc.
Just use extra care in the morning and call your doc first thing what to do with the Zoloft dose. Get you a pill organizer like was mentioned.
I'm taking Zoloft. Here most of medications are in blister packages.I write days to take backside of blister, keep them in pouch close to me.(So I can take meds only I supposed to take)
If all your medications are in bottle,I heard there are good pill organizer.(I didn't need them because of blister packages)
Take care and sorry about my English!
You are definitely not the only one to take the wrong tablet at the wrong time.
Thank you, everyone for your understanding and helping me feel not quite so alone in this mistake.
All my meds come in bottles. I do have a pill organizer for other daily meds, vitamins, etc. but I take these spaced a little after those. I have started keeping these 2 meds in different kitchen cabinets that are associated with time of day. Morning meds near cereal, etc. I've also talked it over with my husband and showed him what they look like so we can talk through it each night. (morning is 1/2 blue pill, evening is 2 white round pills) I even show him the evening meds before taking them. I feel like a child needing to do this, but it is what it is, I guess.
Thankfully, there weren't any major issues after this mix-up. I messaged my primary after doing it, but did not hear back from him (which was odd, they are usually very prompt) ... anyway, I did not take Zoloft yesterday at all. Guess what? I felt better than I have in weeks! For the first time in a long time I had several hours when I felt like "me"! Anxiety crept in late afternoon, but less so that when I take the Z.
Feeling better gave me hope that I will feel better soon. However, that rollercoaster slammed to a screeching halt today. Last night, I slept fairly well, even though it was in a recliner and on the couch (upright for better breathing, but not better for my body).... which means a few 1.5-2 hours sleep bursts. Fairly well is not great, but I'm grateful for any sleep that makes me feel somewhat rested.
I took Zoloft today and had some of the same negative effects, headache and increased anxiety on and off through the day. Went for a long walk and that helped, but once the walk is over, anxiety returns. I haven't been taking Z very long though and this phase of getting used to it is rough!
Took the Trazodone at 10:20pm and now its 1:30am and still no sleep. I know a big part of my issue is the effects of the sinus surgery I had, along with extreme dry mouth due to prescribed nasal sprays and meds. Best help in breathing is a nasal strip to open passages. If anyone needs these, I suggest either the Walgreens or Walmart brand nasal strips, which are latex-free. The brand name Breathe Right strips are made of latex.
Talked to doctor's office today. To stay on 12.5 Z until next Friday when I see the doctor. Seems like so far in the future, but "only" a week a way. When you are going through this day by day, time begins to become a bit skewed. Sure hope it begins to work and helps alleviate this anxiety!
