Alcohol?

Hi all,

Quick question. I went out night before last with two friends and ended up drinking quite a bit of wine, enough that I’d say I was moderately intoxicated. Now, I feel awful physically and emotionally. My concern is that I’ve been crying, just so sad, but for no real reason. I’m so scared to slip back into a major depression, is the alcohol making me feel this way? Can you recommend something to snap me out of this? I’m sincerely worried 😢

Well there are a couple things here. Alcohol is literally a depressant so in general it’s not good for anyone with depression. And if you’re hungover that means your body hasn’t metabolized all the alcohol yet so you’re technically still intoxicated. Wine is also one of the worst hangovers you can have. The best thing for a hangover is to get some electrolytes because your body is depleted of them. Gatorade helps but electrolyte packs are better. Eat some greens, a healthy meal you’ll feel better tomorrow

Oh not me thanks. I was never an alcoholic as you were, but did do my share of drinking in my younger days and know how to deal with a hangover and how my body reacts. Can't do it now and usually stick to just lager and 2-2 1/2 pints twice a week. Anything more isn't worth the effects. I'm a lightweight I'm afraid.

Hello mentioned healthy meal.

Any one alcoholic as I was needs to know first plenty of water..

Dehydration common needs to eat the following yoghurt with added cultures.. Porridge oats because sudden downer means body craving sugar, junk food burgers so on..

Why we those of us who are alcoholics know take out joints are open for business late..

The following useful foods after a session are eggs scrambled , wholemeal bread, fruit oranges, melons, strawberries, kiwi fruit raises blood sugar levels..

Lost vitamins energy could use the old adage a fry up grill not good too much fat as the liver kidneys are effected.

Salmon, trout light meals soup..Not tomato too acidic ..

Use Chicken soup used to make this homemade understand in tubs batches.

Alcoholics always plan there sessions use three different places buy booze no one knows and carry on ..

Please take care

Hello thank you kind words and thank you taking time to reply..

I am clean but with health issues remaining the only involvement is trying to get the message across.

Alcoholism is a problem and can be dealt with as with any illness or condition.

The big problem is the constant barrage of media the advertising must add deplore one chaneel few days ago bombarded alcohol ads.

Yes people have a choice my concern is fine if you wish to be aware of the health risks .

Even worse cuts budgets and resources being cut slashed by councils cutting costs..

I say to any one now is the time to address issues have a think be focused and start to consider getting help ..

Many staff members are being curtailed and made redunant including those with valuable experiences being reformed alcholics..

Also mental health charities another one the same as number rise due to COVID 19.

I have dealt with families recently who one is a friend..

Painful emotional and all for a drink has caused runctions, splits in there relationships..

Have been intermediary and in some quandary to consider being alienated as both parties reluntant to acceptance..

Which is not helping, one has to be realistic.

I wish and pray for all those going the struggle constantly.

One final thought never goes away thinking thoughts first drink morning ask most reformed alcoholics..

Most can sustain and stave off but still have the empty glass on the table, am one...

Have this now filled with water..

We are always following heroes and heroines constantly number of years clean and sorted but it has it compensations.

Sharing stories the love respect and honour managing to get off the most addictive stuff toxics in our society.

Same as nicotine, cigerettes or caffeine in a range of products..

Final point only industry you buy a bottle and product does not actaully tell you what is in it the ingredients.

EU wanted tighter contorls but Wine lobby powerful encompassing many EU countries..

France Italy Spain..

Yet they object why a question never answered.

Thank you for reading..

I can relate to much that you say though not through alcohol. My own addiction is smoking but like you it has caused health issues ie lung damage as I now have copd. I too hate the hypocrisy and misinformation surrounding it with the govt. treating it as a cash cow. I warn others now and spread the message about the harm it can do.

Us walking wounded must do what we can to avoid others ending up destroying their health as we have. Carry on fighting the good fight.

Hello thank you for sharing your addiction smoking..

I agree with everything your saying.

I was in hospital a long time ago had rhinitus a condition caused passive smoking .

Being the night clubs smokers .

Three old gents across the ward had each of them a visit from the surgeon..

Mentioned each one how long been smoking numbers of years banded about tossed in the air.

Never seen this since he added the surgeon will stop today after the operations all of you..

If you do not will get you back in here and undo all the work have done.

Stunned shocked one uttered language unrepeatable..

Then saw me young man listening them about me my nose sinus and problems.

Turned around got the operations all three as one added if I am smoking in front of grandchildren could end up the same..

I am sorry to hear what has happened to yourself anything can help with please ask happy to help..

One final thought addiction few years ago team manager invited addiction specialist for us to talk to..

I was in a mental health charity.

I knew the lady who came as does most life time alcoholics knew and they are part of your life some might not have met but know you.

A sense of embarrassment and poignant thinking the reputations, does happen. Still does..

Team Manager mental health thought nice little chat and some information on alcoholism...

How wrong straight away the addiction specialist recognised me and then asked me to take part.

Me of course holding no punches no point dilly dallying all the group members open mouthed sitting there stunned.

I recall Team Manager never heard my story and when told it emotional upset and think probably helped every one to be honest and think about health..

Upset for me was the attitudes of the so called staff member who uttered wish never had invited her the specialist.

Need I say more..

Please have this website UK based if this might be useful..

Your health conditions lots of support just a thought.

Had this in my index cards useful information, glad to be supportive..

Yes I am on that site and have been for years.

Hello, I am curious about the long-term health effects you mentioned even after having quit drinking. I have had problems with alcohol but am fairly young and haven't had any health problems yet, besides mental health. You don't have to share if you don't want to, but I was just curious what to look out for, be aware of, and maybe it would convince me that it's not worth the risk.

Sorry, wanted to clarify -- my last post was a reply to MrRigatoni's post above. I am not very adept at using forums.

One final point the alcoholism community the serious implications right now is the cutting of resource centres rehabs in the Uk.

I would advise stop right now or seek help because the resources are limited if something did happen need a lot of support could be ages waiting.

Thirteen years ago waited still remember always do then 9 months rehab waiting list and 6 months CPN.

My current information is could be year waiting so if have serious illness might never get treated.

Lost two friends last year before they ever stood foot in rehab so quick so painful.

Stopped going to funerals had enough emotionally and now support members on other websites.

I hope any of this helps you please think carefully what I have said your choice your life.

Another thing your young why need alcohol..

Wish had not am late fifties who knows when this will end one friend dropped down dead in his home, me on the phone.

Just heard the groan deadly silence.

Just let you know he was clean seven years..

So hoping wishing my self manage to keep going..

Please take care and really mean that

Please if you have any further questions please ask me.

I am no apologetic am strong am and do want the alcohol industry to be ceased stop the hype the dangerous aspects of our society.

Did you know Chinese never drink why metobolism means effects them so why do we need this toxin.

Life is too short and need to be healthy.

I'm surprised you aren't aware alcohol is a depressant as I though this was general knowledge. You my dear have a hangover. As alcohol dehydrates you drink water and eat something bland like toast to help settle your stomach and help to soak up any excess. If you have any antacid remedies try that too. Most of all learn your lesson for the future. Also if you are on ad's these can intensify a hangover.

Another thing I have done at times is stick 2 fingers down my throat and chucked up down the toilet. My misspent youth....

Hello pleased to meet you.

Thank you for coming on contacting the forum.

I can answer your question I am an reformed alcoholic of thirty years and been clean thirteen.

Advise support members on websites give information on addiction, alcoholism, drinking.

What you have experienced is the sudden reaction of alcohol with drawing from your systems.

Women metabolise alcohol more slowly then men, means takes longer to absorb alcohol and cause symptoms right now experiencing.

Alcohol is a toxin gives the feelings of elations happiness and can be in large amounts cause immediate depression after stopping drinking.

There is a way and that is first not drink at all..

Sorry but only answer.

Please beware as a woman need to be honest and think if this happening again regularly need to seek help.

Problems you have experienced are common over and over again.

Also beware health risks more likely to be susceptible you need to know having consume more alcohol effects reproduction organs able to con ceive reduced sex drive fertitilty issues.

Body physical appearances changes causes muscle stomach bowel issues. Headaches, strokes, heart attacks.

Diabetes, organ damage

Livers organ smaller in women get effected kidneys heart circulation and cancer.

Please if you are drinking do not.

Please these are the facts.

I am sorry to be blunt but do you need alcohol to be having good times.

There's nothing worse than a hangover. .Anxiety and hangovers simply do NOT go together. I think you're having a hangover. I'm guessing you're likely already feeling better. :)

Thank you everyone! Thankfully I normally only have a drink 2 or 3 times a year but the other night I drank enough for my usual yearly amount. HUGE mistake! It’d just been so long, I was surprised to feel so tearful almost immediately following. Thankfully I can just stop so that decision was made yesterday. No more alcohol for me, I’ve clearly “outgrown it”. I need to be drinking more water anyway. I can’t and won’t risk ever becoming so depressed again, live and learn! Thanks guys! ❤️

Hello thank you for reply hope you are OK ..

Have sent you a PM if you wish to ask me anything I am happy to be helping answering.

Anytime.

Please have plenty of water rest and please remember do I need ???

I used to drink alcohol to escape the cruel reality of the world. Don't beat yourself up about a one off bad drinking session, all you need is a little time and you will be back to normal.

Thank you Diazepam_survival. Somehow my question and comments turned into a discussion surrounding alcoholism and as I said, I literally almost never drink so.. I think you’re right, I hope to feel better soon. Plus, I have a therapy appointment this week and I’ll talk about my increase in depressive symptoms just to be safe. Thanks again!

No problem PackerGirl, I hope you feel better soon ❤

Yes, it is a depressant, believe it or not even though it can undepress you too. It’s like it makes you pay for the privilege. It’s the sulfide in the wine that causes hang over symptoms. Try a sulfide free wine. I had the most delightful morning after a couple bottles of sulfide free wine. I was pleasantly surprised. But I quit drinking alcohol and I feel much better without it. It takes too much away from me. Enjoy life on its own terms, organically, and you will be much stronger. Drink when you want but I suggest it’s better not to in the long term. Find other joys in the environment and be mindful about small things. Dissociation is free and it’s always there.

Hi there, oh the wine! I have that exact problem with wine and really any alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant so it will negate your meds if you are on or make depression worse. But it is temporary for that binge!! Limit to one glass of wine or i actually stopped drinking cuz I didn’t want to cry for no reason !! So drink water, eat and don’t worry too much. But maybe rethink the wine drinking in access!!

Loueeb profile image
Loueeb

I'm sure it's not helping. It is a depressant. Stay off it.

Oh my gosh I'm so glad I saw this post. Alcohol is a depressant you may feel good for a while but then eventually you become depressed or down. It's best to have a few drinks only in moderation if you do have any at all. I struggled with this for the longest time without knowing why I felt the way I did, and after I would drink a few drinks and become moderately intoxicated I would become Moody or cry. Now I limit myself. Good luck, carry on. You can do this.

After almost 25 years of partying too much and dealing with hangovers and depression I quit drinking. (I also had no business drinking with antidepressants) It's been over 13 years and I look and feel great. Just my 2c!
