Quick question. I went out night before last with two friends and ended up drinking quite a bit of wine, enough that I’d say I was moderately intoxicated. Now, I feel awful physically and emotionally. My concern is that I’ve been crying, just so sad, but for no real reason. I’m so scared to slip back into a major depression, is the alcohol making me feel this way? Can you recommend something to snap me out of this? I’m sincerely worried 😢

Well there are a couple things here. Alcohol is literally a depressant so in general it’s not good for anyone with depression. And if you’re hungover that means your body hasn’t metabolized all the alcohol yet so you’re technically still intoxicated. Wine is also one of the worst hangovers you can have. The best thing for a hangover is to get some electrolytes because your body is depleted of them. Gatorade helps but electrolyte packs are better. Eat some greens, a healthy meal you’ll feel better tomorrow
Oh not me thanks. I was never an alcoholic as you were, but did do my share of drinking in my younger days and know how to deal with a hangover and how my body reacts. Can't do it now and usually stick to just lager and 2-2 1/2 pints twice a week. Anything more isn't worth the effects. I'm a lightweight I'm afraid.
Any one alcoholic as I was needs to know first plenty of water..
Dehydration common needs to eat the following yoghurt with added cultures.. Porridge oats because sudden downer means body craving sugar, junk food burgers so on..
Why we those of us who are alcoholics know take out joints are open for business late..
The following useful foods after a session are eggs scrambled , wholemeal bread, fruit oranges, melons, strawberries, kiwi fruit raises blood sugar levels..
Lost vitamins energy could use the old adage a fry up grill not good too much fat as the liver kidneys are effected.
Salmon, trout light meals soup..Not tomato too acidic ..
Use Chicken soup used to make this homemade understand in tubs batches.
Alcoholics always plan there sessions use three different places buy booze no one knows and carry on ..
Yes I have known a few alcoholics in my time including those who have never managed to stop. None of them made old bones. I am very glad you have obviously managed sobriety now.
I can relate to much that you say though not through alcohol. My own addiction is smoking but like you it has caused health issues ie lung damage as I now have copd. I too hate the hypocrisy and misinformation surrounding it with the govt. treating it as a cash cow. I warn others now and spread the message about the harm it can do.
Us walking wounded must do what we can to avoid others ending up destroying their health as we have. Carry on fighting the good fight.
Hello, I am curious about the long-term health effects you mentioned even after having quit drinking. I have had problems with alcohol but am fairly young and haven't had any health problems yet, besides mental health. You don't have to share if you don't want to, but I was just curious what to look out for, be aware of, and maybe it would convince me that it's not worth the risk.

I'm surprised you aren't aware alcohol is a depressant as I though this was general knowledge. You my dear have a hangover. As alcohol dehydrates you drink water and eat something bland like toast to help settle your stomach and help to soak up any excess. If you have any antacid remedies try that too. Most of all learn your lesson for the future. Also if you are on ad's these can intensify a hangover.
Another thing I have done at times is stick 2 fingers down my throat and chucked up down the toilet. My misspent youth....
I can answer your question I am an reformed alcoholic of thirty years and been clean thirteen.
Advise support members on websites give information on addiction, alcoholism, drinking.
What you have experienced is the sudden reaction of alcohol with drawing from your systems.
Women metabolise alcohol more slowly then men, means takes longer to absorb alcohol and cause symptoms right now experiencing.
Alcohol is a toxin gives the feelings of elations happiness and can be in large amounts cause immediate depression after stopping drinking.
There is a way and that is first not drink at all..
Sorry but only answer.
Please beware as a woman need to be honest and think if this happening again regularly need to seek help.
Problems you have experienced are common over and over again.
Also beware health risks more likely to be susceptible you need to know having consume more alcohol effects reproduction organs able to con ceive reduced sex drive fertitilty issues.
There's nothing worse than a hangover. .Anxiety and hangovers simply do NOT go together. I think you're having a hangover. I'm guessing you're likely already feeling better.
Thank you everyone! Thankfully I normally only have a drink 2 or 3 times a year but the other night I drank enough for my usual yearly amount. HUGE mistake! It’d just been so long, I was surprised to feel so tearful almost immediately following. Thankfully I can just stop so that decision was made yesterday. No more alcohol for me, I’ve clearly “outgrown it”. I need to be drinking more water anyway. I can’t and won’t risk ever becoming so depressed again, live and learn! Thanks guys! ❤️
I used to drink alcohol to escape the cruel reality of the world. Don't beat yourself up about a one off bad drinking session, all you need is a little time and you will be back to normal.
Thank you Diazepam_survival. Somehow my question and comments turned into a discussion surrounding alcoholism and as I said, I literally almost never drink so.. I think you’re right, I hope to feel better soon. Plus, I have a therapy appointment this week and I’ll talk about my increase in depressive symptoms just to be safe. Thanks again!
Yes, it is a depressant, believe it or not even though it can undepress you too. It’s like it makes you pay for the privilege. It’s the sulfide in the wine that causes hang over symptoms. Try a sulfide free wine. I had the most delightful morning after a couple bottles of sulfide free wine. I was pleasantly surprised. But I quit drinking alcohol and I feel much better without it. It takes too much away from me. Enjoy life on its own terms, organically, and you will be much stronger. Drink when you want but I suggest it’s better not to in the long term. Find other joys in the environment and be mindful about small things. Dissociation is free and it’s always there.
Hi there, oh the wine! I have that exact problem with wine and really any alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant so it will negate your meds if you are on or make depression worse. But it is temporary for that binge!! Limit to one glass of wine or i actually stopped drinking cuz I didn’t want to cry for no reason !! So drink water, eat and don’t worry too much. But maybe rethink the wine drinking in access!!
Oh my gosh I'm so glad I saw this post. Alcohol is a depressant you may feel good for a while but then eventually you become depressed or down. It's best to have a few drinks only in moderation if you do have any at all. I struggled with this for the longest time without knowing why I felt the way I did, and after I would drink a few drinks and become moderately intoxicated I would become Moody or cry. Now I limit myself. Good luck, carry on. You can do this.
After almost 25 years of partying too much and dealing with hangovers and depression I quit drinking. (I also had no business drinking with antidepressants) It's been over 13 years and I look and feel great. Just my 2c!
