Has anyone found that their Mirtazapine causes their stomach abdomen to bloat out? And have they managed to lose weight by diet after putting on weight on it?

Hi Basten.

I have been on Mirtazapine for a while now and haven't managed to lose a gram 😣. Worse for me is that I am also on Quetiapine which also has a side effect of weight gain. I haven't noticed my stomach bloating but II quite big now so probably wouldn't. It's a good antidepressant but I at the stage now where I am probably going to ask for a referral to a psychiatrist to see about a medication change because of the weight gain.

Apologises for the negative feedback but that's how I have been affected.

Take care xxx

No no I'm glad you told me how you feel. The mirtazepane makes me hungry all the time. Most of these drugs cause weight gain and it's also made my bust go up hugely too. I've tried lots of things. My psychiatrist doesnt really know what to do with me anymore and I feel quite alone . I really hope you get the help you need . Negativity is my speciality so that's not a problem what you wrote. It was kind you took time to reply thankyou

Tried Moclobemide? That's not supposed to cause weight gain.

Also bupropion doesn't cause weight gain but it's difficult to get prescribed in the UK because it's off label.

Thanks for the tip Alex. I will note the name and certainly discuss with a psychiatrist (should I get to see one)

I feel your pain with an increase in in chest size, I have had the same problem in that yes I have put weight on generally everywhere but mostly on my chest. If I get anywhere with a change on medications and manage to lose (or at least not put on) weight I will post a happy post!

Oh yes do please let me know. I am now going to seriously cut out all bad fats sugar and carbs . I'll admit in these days of COVID I've also been eating too much junk which hasnt helped and no exercise. I just find I'm hungry for bad food I.e. sugar all the time so please advise when you get to a better place with what your psych says. I tried Quatiapine and had horrendous night mares.

Never had that problem with Quetiapine - only the weight gain (yes I get that side effect as a double whammy). I have probably eaten healthier since lockdown than I have for a long while. We have had fish and chips only 3 times and nothing else (Macdonalds, Chinese, Indian ). I am cooking from scratch using slimming world recipes. I don't have sugary drinks or sugar in my tea. I rarely eat cake or biscuits. I don't use fat and steam all my vegetables. Granted I haven't exercised since lockdown, which used to be a daily walk with the neighbours dog, but I am not sat on my butt all day.

I think that what I am trying to say is don't start depriving yourself of small pleasures, especially at the moment. Our mental health is fragile enough and telling yourself it is wrong to have something could only make it worse.

Freeze yoghurt in icecube trays and when you fancy something sweet eat some. Can convince yourself that it is luxury ice cream lol.

Take care, stay cool, love yourself xxxx

Thankyou. Yes it's because I'm on my own I guess and dont get to see hardly anyone. I know I've got to try as only me can do it. I've always had a sweet tooth but not this bad. So if you're eating healthy then the weight gain is obviously due to the meds. I was going to try slimming world but a lot of their recipes have pasta which clogs me up. I know I'm now classified as obese as I did a BMI check with the NHS app. And my legs ache so thankyou for your input....I have to try harder but yes if I fail I beat myself up. I'm not at all kind to myself ha ha. Thankyou stay well and safe and it was nice you took the time to reply 😄😄
