Hi everyoneI've been taking mirtazapine for a year. Unfortunately, the side effect is weight gain, so I'm thinking about stopping it. Has anyone stopped taking it? What are the withdrawal effects and how long do they last?

Mirtazapine withdrawal

Mirtazapine is a drug which you should wean yourself off very slowly and in low doses because of its sedating effects and for the unsuspecting, those electric shocks.Your doctor will advise how to taper off the med safely and what might replace it. Going low and slow will probably take 3-4 weeks if not longer. A good tip is if you take it in the morning, switch to night time instead.
If you you decide to stay, walking at least 150 minutes a week helps stay on top of the metabolic syndrome.
Either way, do what's right for you.
my own personal experience was horrendous ended up back on them.
I have just started Mirtazapine on 7.5mg and it’s very helpful for sleep. I hope the withdrawal isn’t too bad. I’d talk to your psychiatrist and take it very slowly
I'd recommend you talk to your GP who may suggest an alternative to the mirtazapine or if they feel you no longer require medication for the reason were first prescribed it and help you wean off.
I was on mirtazapine for 3 months and whilst I had the best sleep ever I found it difficult to wake up and was suffering with really bad brain fog to the point I was like a zombie. After a bad experience with citalopram as a possible alternative I have now been taking venlafaxine for 7 months which suits me much better.
Be very careful weaning off it. My ex-psych had me essentially jump off within two weeks, after I had been on it for 3 years. I thought I was going insane. Stay hydrated. Dandelion tea and prayer helped me.
I was on Mirtazapine starting dose 7.5 & increased to 45mg over several months. I did find it helpful, but after being on the high dose for about 2 years, I started to feel that they were becoming less effective. I arranged a private GP appt & discussed it with him & he decided to try me on Amitriptylene - this was done by slowly tapering off Mirtazapine & introducing Amitriptylene, so I am now on 100mg & definitely feeling better than I have done in a long time. Hope this is helpful & good luck 😉
A lots of people loose weight on mirtazipine. I am only taking it for about 6 months and I gained weight too, but I thought the reason was not being active
