For non-religious and religious: How do you understand the phrase “in spirit”?
Can a human be full in spirit and not generous in spirit?
Why does this author or anyone state that trust is a necessary piece?

I think it is about vulnerability The act of giving leaves one vulnerable less the intention is misunderstood or abused in some way .
Either way it is a risk so trust must be evoked. In the giver
As they say it is a greater blessing to give than to receive.
I would pose that Trust must be implied by both parties.
A bit like hand feeding an Injured animal reach out with the food in your hand.

Yes with out a doubt as to be generous without trust can not happen, the act of giving is a trusting act.
Yes just had a second thinking and it can not happen no matter what it is you may give it requires trust for sure.
As for generous or giving that is subjective really the act of giving is a generous one by virtue. The widows mite was a generous act, So was Christ destruction of the temple in its own way an act of giving.
So I can not separate generosity from the act of giving weather it be the act of supporting emotionally or physically. x
I understand not separating generosity and giving. Trust seems like something that grows over time. I have given to strangers. I didn’t need to trust them to do so.
I think you need trust even to give to a stranger even if it the trust in your own judgement there has to be a degree of trust, is it the right thing to do trust enables the action x
just saying that has not been my experience...
If you make a donation to what ever do you not question weather its the right thing to do for me that is when you place your trust in yourself x

Full in spirit to me,
At rest, a sense that I will be able to walk through the hardness of life. A sense that my life and my happiness are not dependent on my circumstances. Knowing I will be able get back up when i’ve failed.
I would like to add to that that i may have helped others in some way. x

Generous in Spirit is in the persons outlook towards others, has a kind sole.

I think verbiage is related to societal expectations and norms based on time period and community groups.
Try rewording the phrase: to be fulfilled as a person and generous to others, trust is important.
If you generally mistrust everyone and everything, it's hard to be at peace (I speak from experience). You cannot contribute to relationships effectively or provide complete assistance if you're always expecting the worst and hold back.
I appreciate you’re input. It seems your rewording takes the conversation in a different direction. I guess I see trust as a scale, lots of room between mistrust and trust. Do you see any space between trust and expecting the worst? I agree that mistrust and peace do not live together in any healthy happy human interaction. Can I be generous to a strange for whom I have no personal feelings or with whom I have never had a relationship? Perhaps I am wrong in thinking I do not need to feel someone is trustworthy to be generous toward them. Maybe I just trust the stranger until I am given a reason not to.
Being a Christian I would say no. You cannot be fully in Spirit as you are not yet perfected in Heaven. This does not happen until you reach Heaven and become perfected.
It helps to know that you are applying a particular Christian doctrine to your definition of in spirit. You used a slightly different term ‘full’ and capitalized the word Spirit. That says a lot. Is there a human spirit?
