2 NIGHTS OF TERROR.

sweetiepye profile image

I have had 2 nights of terror filled dreams. When I wake the terror remains. I feel like I've lost my mind. I think I was given wrong drug. I take Cymbalta and Wellbutrin was added last week. I took for 7 days and then the terrors started. My doctors office only sees over phone now, so they suggest waiting it out. Is there anything I CAN DO to speed up the process? I am so afraid, please help. Pam .

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I know the doctors all want you to "give the medication a chance to work," but Wellbutrin makes me crazy! I would call the doctor again. I had to get really forceful with mine. It definitely had an adverse effect on me.

That may not be your problem. I'm just telling you what my experience was with that drug. Then do what doc says I guess.

I can't get the dreams and fear out of my mind. I just want ideas or hand holding. I have never been so scared. I have night sweats, panic and anxiety too. Very difficult to get help here now. Could you tell me a little about your experience , or what I might do ? love from Pam

I couldn't get any of it to stop until after he stopped the medication. But he had to okay that. I don't even remember if I weaned off. The panic and anxiety were the worst symptoms. I was shaking inside and out. My brain felt like it was going to explode. I was just full of fear, like you said. And I couldn't make it go away. It was like I was on speed. I wish I could tell you what to do. But nothing worked for me. I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin.

Maybe some anti-anxiety tools: breathing; meditation; tea; warm bath; distraction. I imagine you've tried all of that. I would call doctor first thing in the morning before I took another one and tell him you think you may be having a reaction to the Wellbutrin. There again. It may not be that. But it may be.

I wish I could make it go away. Why don't you pm me? Lynne

I did call and got a reply...he wanted me to taper it off but I had only taken it 7 times so he thought I could just stop it. I'm worried it might be something else... I've had bad headaches and a stiff neck off and on for a time. Last time he saw me he wasn't alarmed.I took some old amoxicillin which I stopped after the dream. I also have muscle jerks and twitches all over body. as well as hallucinations. Are these all drug related ? Time will tell. I badly need support. Stay well, please.

Hi sweetiepye.

Who are “they” ? Did you talk to the office staff, a nurse, or your Dr. ? What do they mean “Wait it out” ? Does the dr. even know you called? It sounds like you are in a lot of distress. What are you suppose to wait for? It also sounds like the terrors don’t go away and you may be afraid to take it and/or go to sleep. Not sleeping makes things worse. Have you ever had these kinds of dreams before ?

I take Wellbutrin combined with another med without a problem, however all theses Meds effect people differently. Maybe it is even the combination with Cymbalta that is the problem for you. I don’t know.

Can you talk to the actual dr. who prescribed your meds? He really should be consulted directly. I would insist on that ! Make sure he listens to you. Let him know how awful you feel. Tell him you are wondering if it could be the Wellbutrin. Can you suggest that you stop the Wellbutrin because of what you are experiencing? Ask him or look up if nite terrors is a known side effect of Wellbutrin. Maybe if you can stop the Wellbutrin doing so will tell you and your Dr. if it is causing the nite terrors.

How were you feeling on the Cymbalta? I assume you took that a while and had no problem?

I don’t think you can just will yourself or do anything to stop yourself from having terror filled dreams. I would definitely call him tomorrow to discuss.

They probably are not harmful in themselves but expecting you to put up with terror filled dreams seems like a bit much.

Good luck.

Thank you. I did speak directly to the doctor and he recommended a specialist to me. He said it will be awhile to set up because of the situation we are all in. I will respond more tomorrow.

Good and I see you have someone else to support you. I hope when you get off of the Wellbutrin, all of what you are experiencing will go away.

Take care. Best wishes for a speedy resolution. ❤️

Sorry to hear what you are going through, Pam. The culprit clearly seems to be the Wellbutrin. Your doctor has said you can come off it, I can only tell you what I would do and that is yo do precisely that. Come off it and because you only took it for 7 days no need to taper, just stop it.

Drink lots of water to flush it out of your system, always have a chilled bottle of water close at hand.

The night terrors will cease I promise you, you didn't have them before so you musn't expect them to continue once the Wellbutrin is well and truly out if your system.

Ask your doctor what you can do to stop the night terrors, maybe a Xanax before bedtime. This will pass before long. Wr're all thinking of you, keep us informed.
