Really fast heart rate

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with their heart rate. I just had a rather scary experience. My heart rate was high. I could feel it in my chest. Nothing I did make it slow down. I thought I was going to go into cardiac arrest. I tried deep breathing and it helped some but when your heart is pounding like that and you cant do anything about it!!! Ahh that was so so so so scary man

I think deep breathing and distractions are the best we can do when this happens. It’s actually one of my most common anxiety problems. I don't often have health anxiety like the way I’ve seen your’s affecting you, but this one gets me all the time. Every once in a while when it happens I can even see my chest moving with my heartbeat and it’s terrifying. I hope you’re okay now. I think the more I focus on it the worse it gets, so I normally go with deep breaths like you said and find something to distract me from it the best I can.

Hi dbeck128! I think it was an anxiety attack. I had lots of these at work. Your Adrenalin kicks in, because your nervous system thinks that you are in great danger. As a result, you have this heart rate and a pounding heart feeling.

When I experience it, I stop working immediately and do the following:

1. I close my eyes, inhale sloooowly for 5 seconds and then exhale as slowly for 5 seconds. It stops the racing heart.

2. I go to the bathroom and wash my face with cold water. If I have a makeup on, I wet the cloth with cold water and apply it onto my forehead, cheeks, neck, etc.

3. I take some Valerian root tablets. It is a plant based sedative, it helps.

I hope I could help and you will get better soon!

xx

Great advice! I’m going to have to try this! Does valerian make you sleepy at all?

Thank you! I hope it will help!

I don’t take much at once (around 400-500 mg). And it doesn’t really make me sleepy.

Arent panick attacks at work the WORST? I've never tried the cold water. But now thanks to you I have the idea! Thank you for all the good info. Much needed <3

I agree. It is very tough to try to cope with it around people, especially during some meeting.

Cold water really helped me. When I have a panic attack I tend to have a “hot face” and it’s like my whole head is burning. It helped me a great deal.

I have that for the past 4 days. I wear an Apple Watch and it was going up to 190s. I have to call an ambulance because it was too high and my blood pressure was high as well. I’m ER they said it’s a panic attack.

My husband suffers from anxiety and depression. He came home early from a jog yesterday because of an extreme elevation in his heart rate. He was doing something he loves and enjoys so it upset him further because he has been unable to run for so long because of his recent time in the hospital and from gout in his toe for two months. He has gotten more out of shape than he has ever been his entire life and it upsets him. Running and riding his bike are his release and what make him happy and calm. He went back to work after being out for over two months and has been taking it slow but it's going slower than he would like. Thanks for the post...now I know that it is a panic attack maybe he can find a way to calm himself with the help of his counselor.

I had very similar experience. I used to love riding bike. I used to ride bike by 16 miles daily by the river. Now I can’t look at it. When I tried doing it it caused me to have panic attack while riding it. My heart rate for elevated and it makes me scared to ride it! Hang in there and take it slowly that’s what my therapist said. Start again little by little do if you can at least 10

Mins and gradually increase

Did you ever get back to riding? I hope so. Same thing when I try the treadmill ugh. Anyways good luck. We will get through this eventually.

Yes. Any physical activity makes me feel very lightheaded and want to pass out. I used to work out. I think I was doing too much though. So he'd definitely not alone!

It has happened to me and it lasted a few hours. I didn't go to the hospital because my brother who is a nurse was here and he told me to lie down and breathe deep through the nose and then let the air out through the mouth. I was doing that al the time. I also got really cold, and was trembling, they got me a blanket. And I couldn't stand to hear any sounds from TV or anything. My brother said my heart was at 170 beats per minute. it's really horrifying. I had many heart tests done and they all came out ok. I've had other episodes but not as bad. I just sit down or lie down and start the breathing exercise until it's gone. I sometimes pray the Rosary (not out loud but in my mind) where you have to pray many Hail Mary's and that repetitiveness helps me out, plus Mary helps out too! I just checked out the book "When Panic Attacks: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life" by Dr. David Burns, he's the one that wrote the famous book "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" People say those books help. But there's a lot of homework to do in them.

I agree, it was a very scary experience and it's like no matter what you do you cant control It which makes you freak out even more! Yikes. I had to do the same thing as you. I googled "how to lower heart rate fast" and found the holding your nose helped. Just breathing in general. So glad I'm not alone

I had this for many years and even developed an extra beat, very scary. I was referred to a cardiologist who said it was normal. My hear was fine it was due to anxiety. Since then I've had the confidence to say it does not matter and taking a few deep breaths it goes. I practice my breathing techniques so that I'm in a better position to control my breathing when anxiety occurs
