Is depression supposed to affect our memory?
Yes I believe it can, I’m not a doctor so I could be wrong.. but the same thing happens to me, the difficulty concentrating was very frustrating sometimes.. is there someone or somewhere on campus you can go to talk to someone, there might be a counselor who could help you get back on track( with your depression and grades)
A lecturer suggested that but we're not in session now. Thanks.
Oh duh you’re not in session( sorry it’s been a few years for me) if I come up with something else I’ll tell you, and if you want to talk some more I’m here
You're really nice, may I send you a DM?
thank you and of course you can
Yes. If you feel it affecting your life you should address the memory/concentration problems asap.
depression imo just makes your mind think about tons of unnecessary things. fills up your brain RAM and thus makes you less focused.
take a break from your life and regain focus
Just have to say, that is an awesome way to put this/ explain that feeling. It really does make sense ( and good advice too)
Thanks.
When I was at my worst, I couldn't even put normal sentences together. I'd forget words like car or walking! I'd loose my sentence half way through it and couldn't remember what I was talking about. Luckily my partner was supportive and assured me it was temporary, he was right. Back to normal sentences now! Scared me a lot at the time, but I didn't blame myself and tried not to focus on it.
Hmmmm. I really hope it's temporary because when I come home will bad grades, no one will believe it's depression.
I don’t know which of the five ways you usually learn is but I can help you a few way. The more senses you involve while learning the more likely you are to remember. Doodle with a colored pencil (touch, smell, eyes, movement) will help. Using computer instead of paper and multicolored pens is much harder to remember things. So when you go over your notes read them out loud while standing for good blood flow and have citrus in your room.
Incorporate as many senses as possible to help your brain. Memory is not in one area of the brain. Best of luck to you.
It's a completely natural way to be when your brain is stressed. I agree with neuronerd's advise though. I was a visual learner. You could even use your studies to focus on something other than how you feel. If you organise it how it fits you, it may actually be more of a blessing than added stress. I had to meditate and do projects to stop focusing too much on my thoughts at my worst. And when your studies are done, you will have that sense of achievement which will help with your depression. Even if that feeling comes later in life.
Check out this philosopher if you have time. He changed everything for me...

The video below made me feel 100 times better about my breakdown, but I wouldn't watch and think 'I need to stop my studies'. You have no idea how much your education will open doors in your future, even if it's not the same field. I left my degree a month before completing it, mid exams. Have spent years trying to forgive myself.
Depression is well known for effecting memory. Do you need scientific studies showing why? I can post some if needed.

These are my favorites but I can find more. They’ll be harder to read.
