I'm a parent of a teenager who's been admitted to a behavioral help facility and is seeing a psychiatrist who keeps changing his medication. How long should we give any given medication to work before we go to the next?

It can take several weeks for some like for depression but less for antipsychotics, anxiety and mood stabilizers. Also there could be withdrawals from some of those to get through before mixing with others. Some could make symptoms worse. I know through my own experiences on and off, trial and error. It was awful. Some sent me back to the hospital. Be careful, especially for a young person.
I'm on a second SSRI now and it is helping but the first one didn't - it actually made me worse. I gave it a couple of months before insisting that I go off of it. Everybody is different, but I'm glad that your teenager is in a facility while going through this.
