I joined this online support group searching for information to guide me to help my daughter and several of my family members with anxiety and depression. In my research I've learned treatment for mental health is frustrating. Western medicine does a great job treating cancer, heart problems and strokes because we look at the organ we are treating. For example: blood tests, xrays and CT scans. It is interesting that we do not do the same for mental health. Your diagnosis is made from a cluster of symptoms. Then you are treated with a medication that is formulated to treat the symptoms but not you as an individual. Therefore, we keep our fingers crossed, hoping there are no side effects and medication will work . That being said, there are a few exciting breakthroughs I have discovered. Brain imaging scans to check the flow to the brain, cognitive therapies, and genetic testing for drug therapy.
Several podcasts I have listened to made me realize that our environment and diet plays a big role in our physical and mental health. Ever wonder why there is sugar in almost everything you eat? Or how you can eat a whole bag of potato chips but you cannot eat a whole chicken? Hmmm.. what is in our food? This is another sad fact.....you no longer have to drive for fast food because it will be delivered to your front door. My dream is Mental health is at top of heath care problems. Yes your heart and kidneys are important but the body cannot live without the mind ( sorry for the corny movie line). I've found online support groups is an awesome tool to have in your tool belt.
