So I had hoped to find a moment to feel inspired to actually write before I posted anything else positive but it’s been a few days and I got nothing... but let’s try anyway...
One of the hardest things is life is to take care of ourselves. Modern life has been made so much better by any number of technological and medical advancements. But at the same time it has become even more demanding somehow. People work harder and longer than they did in the past to be considered closer to poverty than their grandparents. All the while being told what we had or bought last year isn’t good enough anymore. Everything must be shiny and new, including our bodies.
Access to infinite information somehow leaves us feeling more alone, frightened and desperate than ever. We’re constantly lied to and being told to be afraid of everything and shown success stories we can never emulate because of our circumstances or simply not being lucky enough when the time is right.
Everything about modern life is exhausting. Mentally, emotionally, and physically. Everything we do is potentially judged by billions of eyes. A mistake can go viral and earn the fury of millions. We can have a thousand “friends” but no one to talk to.
Despite all of these problems and responsibilities , take some time to yourself. It doesn’t have to be a whole day. You don’t even have to do anything. Just take ten minutes, take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that what you’ve done today is good enough. Silence that voice that tells you you aren’t pretty, smart, or successful enough and just be present and happy. Eat dessert and don’t feel guilty. Watch the clouds go by. Something that is relaxing to you.
Remember that modern society is entirely superficial. By simply owning a cell phone you have more power and success than thousands of years of human history could have ever dreamed imaginable. I remember watching Star Trek and other science fiction as a kid and being told that stuff is from the future. You will never have it. But somehow we do have a lot of it. Powerful computers that fit in our pockets, cars that are safer and cleaner to drive, air conditioning, heat, access to food and medicine.
By simply being alive and working towards the future you have gained a measure of success beyond the wildest dreams of our ancestors even a couple hundred years ago. Don’t let anyone tell you you haven’t.
Take some time to yourself. You’ve earned it.
