An AMAZING Metaphor! (Please Read!) This Could Change Your LIFE!

Twenty years ago, when Marc and I were just undergrads in college, our psychology professor taught us a lesson we’ve never forgotten. On the last day of class before graduation, she walked up on stage to teach one final lesson, which she called “a vital lesson on the power of perspective and mindset.” As she raised a glass of water over her head, everyone expected her to mention the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” metaphor. Instead, with a smile on her face, our professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water I’m holding?” Students shouted out answers ranging from a couple of ounces to a couple of pounds. After a few moments of fielding answers and nodding her head, she replied, “From my perspective, the absolute weight of this glass is irrelevant. It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light. If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the absolute weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.” As most of us students nodded our heads in agreement, she continued. “Your worries, frustrations, disappointments, and stressful thoughts are very much like this glass of water. Think about them for a little while and nothing drastic happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to feel noticeable pain. Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed, incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.” Think about how this relates to your life. If you’ve been struggling to cope with the weight of what’s on your mind, it’s a strong sign that it’s time to put the glass down. It’s time to let GO...

Thank you. But if I may ask, how exactly do you reeaally let go, completetly? And hold none of it at all back? I've sometimes before thought I'd let go and then something comes up later and it just tells you "Oh, so you have gotten over it, haven't you? Let go, hadn't you? Well, then, I'm sorry to inform you..."

Hi J_Hermann, letting is a process-it doesn't happen overnight. Sometimes you do slide back...You can let go completely when you realize that you have just plain had enough, when holding onto it no longer serves you and that it is no longer in your best interest......Also, worrying about things you cannot control is useless-but I know that doesn't stop us from worrying! But this is an important part of letting go, because you should ONLY worry about what you CAN control. There is no point in worrying over what you cannot control-that will get you nowhere fast and it will just cause your health to decline. And, it does no good. It is not effective. It doesn't solve anything. You know for sure that you have let go when a situation no longer carries an emotional charge-you have to learn to ACCEPT-NO, you do NOT accept WHAT happened, and you do not CONDONE it, but you SIMPLY JUST ACCEPT THE FACT THAT, YES IT DID HAPPEN.

You can get books on letting go or read articles on the internet about it if you want to look at it further. We all have hurts and things that we need to let go-ALL of us. You need to be ESPECIALLY KIND to yourself during this process, forgive yourself, and release yourself from all judgment.

Good luck my friend!! ; )
