Mirtazapine drowsiness
For me the drowsiness remains a side effect after a couple of years. I make use of it to make sure I sleep! I take it quite early in the eve - three hours before sleep - and that cuts down the drowsiness the next day.
But everyone is different... you may have to discuss with your doctor.
Hi Chris-73,
It all sounds very normal to me, in terms of expected side effects.
New meds usually take around three to four weeks to become fully effective and tolerated by your body. Taking mirtazapine as a sleep aid can require some work on your part - to decide the best time to take it before sleep and avoid the hangover next morning. For me, it's 9 hours before the alarm clock goes off
The start up side effects will often continue for that same period. There may be some side effects that remain depending on your personal circumstances and physical/emotional traits. Those that remain will not be too troublesome in the majority of cases except for the appetite change (eating more) which can easily lead to weight gain.
To give yourself the best chance of success with a medication you just have to keep taking it as prescribed. Don't miss doses, don't alter your dosage or stop taking your medication without a medical consultation.
If you are having bad side effects after a month or so, assuming you've stuck it out that far, then it's definitely worth discussing an alternative with your doctor. Different meds suit different people.
