I have forever been searching for all of the above-referenced resources. It is beyond my understanding that this should be so complicated. I can't imagine why mental health "sponsors" seems such a foreign concept. I understand the responsibility and need for a screening process but, every other "anonymous" program has overlooked this concern for the sake of its necessity! It is additionally baffling that people desperately trying to take back their lives, with the determination to reach out, must mindread the dry terminology people unintuitively assign this obvious resource. Although I"ve found this website, I'm still as of yet no closer to the single necessary "support person" I've been seeking. What am I missing?

I think because we're all struggling here. The beauty of this site is that we are all in the same boat. In AA a sponsor is someone who is in full recovery. Most of us here are still struggling and we haven't made it there yet so we're not qualified to be a sponsor. I say that speaking for myself but maybe someone else here is. I can't be a sponsor but I can definitely be a friend.
If you are in the US- you might try National Alliance on Mental Illness. They have a website also, and have chapters in many states. They also have volunteers who facilitate peer groups- great organization I think - biggest grass roots mental health support organization in the US.
