Anxiety & Finding a new job

Hi All,

So ive been anxious my whole life but my severe anxiety started when I was 15, it has held me back from a lot of things growing up, I never learnt to drive a car because I was always too scared and it just became too much of a fear, and finding jobs was a nightmare because I would be sweating and shaking, stuttering my words during interviews, I'm 23 and I've never worked a part time or full time job, I've worked casual hours during my schooling here and there at my fathers work.

I met my now husband a few years ago and I moved from Australia to the U.S a year and a half ago, I haven't travelled very much around the area without my husband unless it's somewhat walking distance or I have fully planned things out.

I have been looking at jobs and applying online and nothing has come about and a lot of more local companies want you to apply in person but I'm so anxious to go in store and apply. Luckily my husband has been supportive in letting me take my time but I don't really know anyone here that can refer me somewhere, it's ridiculous just hiding away at home all day becoming a crazy cat lady (haha) whilst my husband is out there working hard for us to survive. I also don't have a lot of experience and it's hard when I'm getting older and not having too much on the resume.

This is kinda all over the place but is anyone in the same boat or has been and can give me any advice???

Miracle jobs for anxious people?? Lol

mickey9,

Everything about your post rang true to me. I'm 24 and never learned to drive due to anxiety. Only one or two part-time summer jobs which my psychologist in college pushed me to do. For a while I would start vomiting when I would fill out job applications--used to be overweight, but my stomach slimmed down quite a bit from the vomiting. After I gave up on the application process I thought I would apply for odd jobs like restaurants or supermarkets since that gets rid of the application process, at least in Italy. Thing is I live in Italy with my mom and grandma, and the supermarket shifts are 12 hours. Yesterday my mom and I went to an interview at a restaurant & the interviewer asks if I can carry a tray. My mom doesn't say I have dyspraxia but basically says things that come naturally to other people don't to me. And at first the interviewer said come tomorrow; later on he just said leave your phone number.

As for the advice part, I can recommend mock interviews to get rid of the sweating and shaking. Believe me, I've went into plenty of interviews shaking. You can also try applying to remote jobs on Indee.com (phone interviews can take some of the pressure off). In addition you can try applying for disability for anxiety--jobs for anxious people!
