I have been feeling trapped in my own head for as long as I can remember (28years). I want to get out, but I don't know where to start. Suggestions?

Where to start
Knowing that you feel trapped inside yourself is a start to getting out. Self awareness is an important skill to develope when it comes to keeping our behavior in check and it can help with emotions or mania too. The effect of "getting out" doesn't last forever if you have an untreated chronic condition but it really makes the situation more self manageable. When you get annoyed with your thoughts and you notice yourself "saying" to yourself so then you are being self aware and at that moment take advantage and try "talking" to yourself. "Tell" yourself that you need or want to stop the annoying or dangerous thought(s). Sometimes it takes several tries but most of the time you can distract yourself if nothing else. Pretty soon you may start to actually "listen" to yourself more receptively over time.
You can start by going to see a Psychiatrist who will work with you to diagnose what really ails you and help you get on a treatment plan tailored for your condition.
You could either do what I did, and that is spend well over a decade working on your mind(self-therapy) to get yourself back in control of your mind or you could walk into the doctors office and get on a treatment which is quicker and a better way to work on resolving the issues you may need to.
Thank you for the advice.
how long did i have to wait for what?
Kobojunkie is right. I answered your question to directly and did not consider that professional treatment had not already been tried. Thank you Kobojunkie.
