High stress and anxious

Woke up around 3 a.m. ruminating about having to go out of town on business for 4 days.

first time out in 2 months

While earlier in the week I looked forward to the trip and seeing friends now I'm thinking on how to skip the trip entirely

The build up of pressure is intense and current skills subdue the stress for about 15 minutes.

You are recognizing that you're too anxious and losing sleep about this trip. This isn't normal for you, is it? Something has changed but you don't know what or why. I can recommend you start with some counseling to determine what's going on with your life and within you unless you can determine this answer yourself. I don't like the idea of you going to a doctor 1st because then you're looking at medication right away and that's not necessarily your answer. You can ask your doctor for a recommendation for a therapist or counselor. You can ask other people if they know of anyone. I also have a long list of self help options that have helped other people on this site but I think you will still need to talk to a live person who can listen to the details of your life and help you find what is going on there that's causing your anxiety. Have experienced similar things, as an event gets closer...

The only thing I will say is whenever I've managed to go the thoughts are far worse than the event, I know it's not easy though.

I made a rule for myself that if I schedule anything, I will at least show up no matter what. I was starting to cancel way to many engagements. Because of fear. So far so good.
