Question about Remeron

Hi, I have struggled with anxiety and depression most of my life and wasn't officially diagnosed until I was 32. I've been on/off different meds and am currently getting TMS Therapy and my psych doc started just started me on Remeron. I was told weight gain is a major side effect. I'm able to fall asleep, but I wake up too early. Has anyone had success with Remeron?

Hello.

I've tried Remeron (Mirtazapine) twice. Both times with lots of weight gain and bloating issues.

The first time it helped a lot with my sleep and depression, but the second time it didn't. It didn't really help with my sleep and I had some horrible side effects too. So I came off it.

Are you using it as an antidepressant or is it for sleep?

Best wishes 💗

Thanks for your reply! Im taking Remeron for anxiety, depression, and sleep. Everyone says it knocks them out, but I took 15 mg last night and I still woke up in the middle of the night :( I've tried Trazadone with the same response. Have you found anything helpful for you?

The best antidepressant I've tried for sleep was amitriptyline. That's an older antidepressant in the class of Tricyclics. You start off with 10-25mg at night and work up, max dose is 300mg I think.

It can have some bad side effects but I didn't get any apart from some weight gain and I couldn't empty my bladder very well when I went to the loo.

There are a few of the older ones in the tricyclics that can be used for sleep issues associated with depression and anxiety. They went out of favour when the SSRIs came along, as Prozac etc was supposed to have a better side effect profile.

How long have you been on the remeron?

Just started on 4/1 and going through TMS Therapy. If the therapy doesn't work then I'll probably go back on Cymbalta. Have you tried CBT?

I did. But it didn't help me but I don't think it was right for me at the time. I was depressed and exhausted from looking after my twins babies, I needed sleep not CBT which is all the UK seems to push in the way of talking therapies. I do think it is very helpful for lots of people though. From what I understand it helps to change negative thinking.

BTW - what is 4/1?

Best wishes 💗

4/1 means April 1st. That's when I started Remeron. Take care :)

I just started remeron on Saturday night. My anxiety was making me not able to eat so for me, having an appetite again is a nice change. My anxiety is better but I'm having restless legs. If the remeron is making you gain weight that is a good sign that it is working.
