I believe magnesium generally has a calming effect. I used to take it and it gave me a really sore stomach, took ages for me to discover that was the cause.

Thank Jeanjeanie, I have very loose stools a couple of times a day most days and headaches. I just wondered if it could be the supplement.i have had only one Af episode in six months which went after 2 hours with Flecainide but two days later I still feel very feeble.

Too much magnesium will do that.

Thank you Bob but did You mean it will give me loose stools or make me anxious.

Magnesium. Think epsom salts which is magnesium.

For some people it can give loose stools. I now take magnesium glycinate which suits me better. Sorry it wasn't taurate that gave me a sore stomach, it was magnesium citrate, have never taken taurate. I would try taking your dose mid meal and see if that helps. Perhaps start with a lower dose too. I take just one tablet mid breakfast, but eat magnesium rich nuts too. Also add magnesium flakes to my bath.

I only take 1 capsule a day as lots of nuts and seeds in my diet. As jeanjeannie50 says it is usually calming. My dog has a canine version called Stressless!!

Aside from having to walk round in Tena for men just in case I had an involuntary bowel movement that equalled the force of a whale’s blowhole and the increased ectopics it was great taking Magnesium Taurate 😂

Hi, I’ve been taking Magnesium Taurate for many years on the recommendation of Dr Sanjay Gupta (York Cardiology) for me it’s really helped with palpitations and anxiety.

I have been taking 125 mg of Magnesium Taurate daily for the past year or two and have had no ill effects.

Been taking Mag Taurate for over 2yrs, no side effects at all. Dr Sanjay Gupta recommends

After watching a video by Dr. Sanjay Gupta I have recently purchased some Magnesium Taurate so read the above with interest and will keep an eye on any changes as I haven't started yet. In the meantime I swear by the following " Cacao is the purest form of chocolate. It's one of the highest sources of antioxidants in foods and has a high amount of flavonoids. Cacao is higher in protein, fibre, magnesium and iron" I buy the organic powder and with a little honey and hot milk it is delicious , so I will have to be cautious with my dosage if using both!

Some people seem to tolerate magnesium supplements better than others. Loose stools are a common side effect which if frequent can deplete electrolytes like sodium and potassium and this in turn can potentially cause arrhythmias.

Can I suggest that you stop magnesium for a trial period and try incorporating foods high in magnesium into your regular diet. I can think of no objective reason for magnesium causing increased anxiety but as you well know anxiety is a nasty little parasite that feeds on anything that causes you stress. If you are worried that magnesium will make you anxious it probably will!

Please stay safe and well

You probably need to take less as magnesium can have this effect. One Doc told my wife to take enough to make her have lose bowel movements and then take less until that stopped.

I've been taking it for about three months and noticed an improvement in my digestion and sleeping pattern. I'm sorry about the anxiety - I've definitely had it - I personally sought help for that and it's made s difference. Maybe lower your dose of magnesium if you want to find out?

Gain profile image

Yes, I have done so in the past but thank you for kind response.

Unlikely to make you anxiety worse in itself however the symptoms you experience may heighten your anxiety. There are a few contraindications for Magnesium -

ancient-minerals.com/magnes...

I cannot take any oral Magnesium without severe consequences - but I use mineral oil spray and bathe in Sea Salts once a week and that seems to work very well for me - with no consequences.

Thank you, helpful to know that others have issues similar to my own.

Maybe try another Magnesium compound with taurine and other 'heart goodies' in it. I have taken this one for 6 years expresschemist.co.uk/nutri-... I also use spray on Mg as I need a lot (scoring very low on tests) and I can't tolerate too much via the stomach. Good luck.

I guess I really need to have my levels checked which I will do as soon as it becomes possible again. All the best and thank you.

Magnesium will give you loose stools, which is fine. If you have watery stools or multiple toilet visits then cut the dose back.

As has been said previously, magnesium has calming affects, it helps aid sleep too.

It won’t be that making you anxious.

Shortly after I take mine I can actually feel myself chill out.

As a nutritionist I think it is unlikely that the magnesium is causing anxiety - it actually works to reduce anxiety by it's beneficial effect on the adrenal glands. It is a natural relaxant hence some people have bowel problems. Everybody is different and it is sometimes the case that it cause digestive and bowel problems but imo it's unlikely to be the cause of anxiety.

From all that I've read magnesium is an important mineral that many of us are deficient in possibly due to a number of factors including depletion in the soil in which our food grows. Bathing in a healthy dose of Epsom Salts or using a magnesium spray is a good alternative to taking a supplement.

I will try the bath with Epsom Salt. Thank you for the tip.

I take magnesium taurate but in 3 divided doses of 100mg -with breakfast ,around 4pm and just before I go to sleep. I find it helps with anxiety and since sticking to this schedule I have not had any anxiety attacks. I think dividing the dose helps with the digestion of it but as my bowels are unpredictable after a colectomy it's hard to say!

Gain profile image
Gain in reply toAuriculaire

Many thanks. I only take 2 per day one in the a.m and the other before bed. But I think I will cut it to 1 at bedtime for a while . Take care

I did try it and I thought it made my heart very fast at times so I stopped taking it. It may not have been the Taurate but I now take magnesium citrate and have had no problem with that

I tried to take magnesium taurine but it made my palpitations worse. After researching I found out it was the taurine. So now I take magnesium glycenate with no problems.

Hi. I had no problems taking Magnesium taurate for several months (600mg). I only switched to a complex as the Magnesium taurate got too expensive! No issues with either anxiety or stomach issues. Just avoid Magnesium Oxide and Magnesium Sulphate.

I started taking Magnesium Taurate about 2 months ago after reading another post on here. Was having a problem lowering my blood pressure - after many years trying everything else this did the trick!! I also noticed palpitations have been greatly reduced and I sleep much better! I used to take Magnesium Citrate and yes, you need to be careful with the citrate form as that is what they give people with constipation problems. I take 300mg a day of the Mag. Taurate split in two doses.

I took magnesium taurate after Dr Gupta recommended it and it was 600mg one called Tom Oliver. I'm not sure why but it caused me to have atrial fibulation attacks all the time..I would have a break of one half day and then it would come back again. I thought my atrial had got worse and didn't register it could be the pills as magnesium is meant to be so good for the heart. But my partner said why don't you stop the magnesium and within a few hours I was atrial free for a few weeks. Also on Amazon one of the reviews I later discovered said that one person ended up having to be cardioverted after taking it. Why don't I tolerate magnesium? ... I would like to take a safe dose that could lower BP and help me sleep better and help my heart but even a low dose of I'm nervous to take after this experience. But want to feel the benefits for my heart.
