In Need of a Trainer

I live in a suburb of Seattle, WA. (Redmond) It is clear my husband needs more exercise as his treatment of Lupron, Zytiga, Prednisone are causing bone loss (30% loss since November 2020). Internist has recommended Fosamax, but the side affects are daunting. Would like to see if exercise will help without the drugs. How do I go about finding an appropriate trainer in my area? Any ideas?

Gyms usually have a list. Fosamax is pretty mild.

Hey Tall_Allen--do you recommend or have an opinion on Fosamax vs Boniva? my concern with all those drugs is necrosis in jaw. THANKS

Those are very mild bisphosphonates - much less chance of ONJ.

THANKS, TA...I respect your knowledge and opinions--do you see any advantage or disadvantage of 1 over the other?

Risk of ONJ is small but marginally higher with the stronger of the two (Boniva). Boniva is better at reversing osteoporosis.

You are on the right track. Weight training with a trainer has been an incredible help to me. I’ve actually gained muscle mass and I experienced a little I know fatigue. Very little bone density loss. Go to a few local gyms and interview trainers. It’s like a dr or lawyer etc. It needs to be a good fit. And when you’ve paid for a session it’s hard to find an excuse not to go. For me, a tough son of a bitch was perfect. He never listens to my whining or complaining. He just pushed me. Three miserable hours a week and what a difference.

Thanks for the great advice. We have several good gyms in the area, so will have my husband work on the interviewing process. Did you just pay for individual sessions with a number of different trainers to try to determine which might work for you? Is it expensive?

I actually had this guy Recommended by a friend. Funny story. I was really scared what ADT would do to my body. I walked into his gym and introduce myself. I took off my shirt and told him that I was going to have zero testosterone because of the treatment I was going on. I said “can you make it so I don’t look any worse a year from now“? He replied, “if you look like that after a year in my gym, testosterone or no, I’m closing the doors.” Lol. And ya know I actually look better than before adt with this guy and I feel great. He’s not cheap. $60 a session. But for me, it’s life changing. If you can’t afford, hire a guy once a month to teach you what to do and check on you monthly for progress. Check with your MO too. He may have a suggestion

I used to train at the Pro Sports Club in Redmond with Buzz A. He was fantastic.

Hope we are able to tap into a great trainer. Unfortunately, we don't belong to the private Pro Sports Club. The search continues.

30% bone loss is a lot. There is no bigger proponent of exercise on this site than me, but you may want to reconsider your concerns about a bone strengthening agent.

If your husband is all in on the exercise great, but it’s still tough when you’re on ADT and have not been strong and fit-he’s behind the 8-ball on this. It’s like climbing out of a hole. Hard work awaits him, but it’s transformative and will chase away all of his side effects and preserve the bones.

Consider the Fosamax in the meantime. He definitely does not want to risk fracture, especially in the lower body.

Nothing about PC is easy. I wish a positive attitude were enough...my guy has plenty of that. The search for a trainer continues. Thanks for the great advice.

I learned magnesium has an enormous influence on bone density. Worth doing some research. We are typically getting more calcium than we can use, but much less magnesium. There are several, five at least, types of magnesium that have separate functions/effects, all favorable (magnesium stearate not considered). I found this eye opening.
