Hi everyone, just a question with regards to pain that my old man is feeling at the moment. It started round about the time he started radiotherapy on his Prostate. They decided to do an MRI and although this chucked up a couple more lesions than what was already known, he was cleared for spinal compression. His nurse informed me that although this is the case, some of his other mets could be 'pinching' on his spinal cord. They gave him a couple of treatments of radiotherapy on his L5 to rule this out na he said that the back pain he had been feeling also has now eased off a bit.
The pain he is currently feeling lies in his legs, they put him on a course of dexamethasone and he is currently on a mixture of painkillers, none of which seem to be alleviating the pain. They have just today said they will swap his cocodamol for morphine. He describes the pain as travelling around his legs, they hurt in one place one day then in another place the next.
My question is what have you fellas ever had done to help with the source of the pain in the past and has it worked? I feel as though his oncologist has put him through to someone to help mask the pain but doesn't seem to be doing anything to tackle the source of it. Is there anything anybody can recommend asking her? My fear is that disability could be lurking around the corner with the way things are going. Thanks in advance as always guys

Hi Hillwalker, I’m sorry to hear about so much pain for him. This wears on you also I am sure.. Sounds brutal.. I hope that he can improve ... others will chime in as what to do. Please take good care of yourself in this precarious situation. He needs you so .. Love never fails. Thank God for our partners ! ❤️
Hi Nal, thanks for your response. His nurse assumed it is nerve pinching and his oncologist has referred him to a pain nurse to give him medication to mask the pain. I see my dad tonight so I'll get a more comprehensive description then. He's not the best at explaining things but I'll post what he says. Thanks again 👍
If it is “nerve pinching”, compression of spinal nerve root, then the answer is to decompress it. A minimally invasive (small incision “Microscopic Decompression” of the compressed spinal nerve root(s) is the preferred solution. I have just gone through this with severe compression of L-2 root being the cause giving terrible leg pain. MRI with contrast showed the problem. Note that one nerve will only give pain (and or numbness and weakness) on one side. The nerve compression can be caused by degenerative disease and herniated discs and not only from cancer, as was the case with me. My first decompression did not relieve it completely in March, so I had a repeat procedure in April. Now it is much better. Starting to walk hills again myself! 👍🙋♂️🏃🏼♂️
That's really useful info, thank you very much. He has had a full spinal MRI but they mentioned any sort of compression though this was initially suspected. I think a good chat with the onc is required but he seems reluctant to do this for some reason
To rid me of my leg pain my neurologist has me on 1 1 Duloxetine (Cymbalta) Hcl Dr Caps 30mg once a day (Cymbalta) Hcl Dr Caps 30mg once a day. It works for me....
Note: Cymbalta is a prescription medicine used to treat a certain type of depression called Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Cymbalta belongs to a class of medicines known as SNRIs (or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors). Cymbalta is also used to treat or manage: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).
One of the side effects is it helps with pain. Ask his doctor. I am not a doctor but I do look handsome in a white coat.
Hahaha, thanks John. I think they have prescribed him something similar bit he said it doesn't seem to be having any effect. How long do they usually take to kick in?
Hard to answer that question since I've been on them since June 27, 2014. So long ago that I really can't recall. Sorry. BTW forget about me looking handsome in a white coat.... now I look gorgeous....(Regards to your good looking DAD)...
It's OK, I'm sure he can have that discussion with his pain nurse though she just seems to be dosing him up with morphine and hoping that does the trick at the moment. Haha, well I do look a lot like my dad just minus the hair so I can vouch for his handsomeness 😂
