Joint and leg pain!!!

Husband is suffering from knee and leg pain. Also swollen feet and ankles. The oncologist does not want to treat the pain and I’m wondering if it’s because most joint aches aren’t from cancer? But my theory is that the joint pain could be due to the chemo, lupron, Zytiga, etc! So isn’t that really cancer pain? Some of those meds do deplete joint lubricant? Thank you for your suggestions!

Sounds just like me! I am almost70. Always active but in the last year I have lost energy and have edema in my feet. 21 years since my Radical prostatectomy.

You deserve an explanation as to why he is not treating the pain.

And you should also get a second opinion.

But also keep in mind there are lots of issues with pain medication.

Interesting, I am getting similar pain. I am also on ADT, Zytiga.

Knee pain wakes me up at night. It's better in the day when I am moving.

I don't have swelling, just stiff, and pain.

I look forward to hearing from others and some more possible treatment ideas.

IF you consult the list of Side Effects, from certain treatments, you should find some 'supporting' information.

I had joint pain and some swelling and neuropathy while on 'Eligard' - similar to Lupron.

I think you are owed a better explanation and perhaps a better action plan .....

Exactly correct. Treatment worse than disease... Glad I am not alone in not just thinking it, but saying it. It is so True

Been there, done that. Adjusted meds and got a life back. (at least for a while. BCR hitting me hard right now.)

Oncologists can be shockingly narrow-minded when it comes to quality of life issues. Not treating pain? Why not? Pain is undesirable for a whole host of reasons and not treating it is unacceptable, in my opinion. Pain means something's wrong, and not dealing with pain means something isn't being taken care of properly.

Likewise the swollen feet and ankles (usually referred to as peripheral edema). Buildup of fluid in the feet and ankles means something's not working properly. For a lot of guys this is because the pelvic lymph nodes aren't properly draining fluid due to lymph node involvement, poor circulation, lack of moment, etc.

Edema can be relived several ways (I know because my husband is dealing with it right now)... --diuretics can reduce fluid buildup, though they can have unpleasant side effects (dry mouth, frequent urination, etc.)

--lymphatic drainage massage, performed by a trained therapist, can help stimulate the lymphatic system and work out fluid. (Lymphatic massage is very gentle as the lymph system is right under the skin, above the muscle layer.)

--elevating the feet while resting. Try to avoid sitting with the hips at the lowest point as that means the pelvic nodes are in kind of "sump" position and it's harder to move fluid out of the this part of the body.

Treating the patient means treating the patient--not just treating "the cancer."

I'd definitely push back on these issues. Tell your oncologist you want to evaluate the leg pain and the edema and work towards resolving those issues. You are in charge!!!

Listen to Wildrose, everyone different, treatments may be same, lot of cases, but all react differently. Feel for all. But biggest problem experienced in my case, and all the bloodwork numbers, so far, means that Urologist, oncologist, did their jobs, for now, despite side effects, but, because doctors happy, does not mean all is well. Quite the contrary.Far from it. It is like, so far, doctors have done their jobs. And they move on to next patient. Regardless of seriousness of aftereffects, they have forgotten you, to a degree anyway. Get another opinion! Find an answer. Good luck. Shooter 1,hey

I've used compression stockings for leg and ankle swelling for almost two years. They have taken away the swelling and my legs don't hurt any more.
