Long-Term Incidence of Secondary Bladder and Rectal Cancer in Patients Treated With Brachytherapy for Localized Prostate Cancer

There's been a lot of debate about RP vs RT (and still ongoing). Not trying to add fuel to the fire, but something to be aware and discuss with your MO/Urologist/Radiologist:

"TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

Patients undergoing radiation therapy for prostate cancer are at risk for a secondary malignancy. In this evaluation of SEER data from 1988 to 2015, the authors compared secondary cancer incidences of 318,058 men who underwent either brachytherapy or prostatectomy. After propensity-score matching, the 20-year incidence of bladder cancer was 6.0% for men undergoing brachytherapy and 2.4% for men undergoing prostatectomy. Likewise, the incidence of rectal cancer was 1.5% for men undergoing brachytherapy and 0.5% for men undergoing prostatectomy.

Urologists should be aware of increased, but overall low, secondary cancer risks when counseling men regarding prostate cancer therapy."

Since OP's post is dated "January 16, 2020" might it be more current than the 2016 on link you provided. ????

Doubt it. These are all cohort/prospective studies. This particular report is short on details, so hard to get comfortable with any association. Allen also has a list on his link with reports of varying degrees of details. My point was that the decision needs to be discussed with BOTH radiologists and urologist. Everyone is different and the evidence soft.

Nope. It is a question of the level of evidence, not the recency.
