Hi all! To make a long story short - my father is being treated for prostate cancer, diagnosed 5.5 years ago. He underwent a prostatectomy, radiation, currently on Lupron & Erleada with most recent PSA at 0.01. He has been having urinary urgency for quite a few months and had a urinalysis done which showed 11-25 RBC. He has been referred to a Urologist for a cystoscopy and urine cytology to rule out bladder cancer (oncologist is worried it could be that). I’m freaking out he could now have a secondary malignancy.. any articles, research, guidance, etc. for me until he sees the Urologist?
Thank you!

Sorry don’t think I explained it correctly. He only has prostate cancer and they’re trying to rule out bladder cancer now as the cause of his microscopic hematuria and urgency symptom.
It seems totally appropriate to be checked out by urologist. My husband developed serious urological problems caused by the radiation therapy scarring. This doesn't happen to everyone, luckily.
My younger brother is 20 years out from his prostatectomy. Gleason 9 but no apparent BCR since then. However, about a year ago he developed bladder cancer. I am also Gleason 9 after a RRP ten years ago. I do have BCR, now, but no indication of bladder cancer....yet. Both my brother and I had salvage radiation. Is my brother's bladder cancer related to his earlier battle with PCa? Don't know but it is suspiciously coincidental.
I went through the same procedure, cystoscopy, to rule out bladder cancer in March. Its a pretty easy and fast procedure. Prior to that I also did a gene or DNA based test that was inconclusive but leaned toward negative. My cystoscopy confirmed it. I had HDBRT and IMRT as my treatments.
Same thing - about 3 weeks ago - cystoscopy. EASY. Find a urologist who uses a flexible probe and tell them no knock-out anesthesia. Mine was done by a doctor who does a lot of them (claims over 1,000/year) - was in and out of the exam room in about 20 minutes, and I got to see what he was seeing on the screen - plus he explained what he was seeing Totally painless and not really even uncomfortable. If you see them coming at you with the old-fashioned rigid probe - pull your pants on and RUN-AWAY.
Chances are - your dad will be fine. High RBC isn't uncommon in men who had radiation - scarring of the urethra due to the radiation exposure causes it.
Try not to worry until there is something to worry about (what I try with some success to do..)
I agree with akaipop3ps and Don_1213...... Easy 1 2 3 procedure. I was viewing what the doctor was viewing but couldn't see the diamond engagement ring I shallowed when my girl friend said no.......
