I am going to meet my MO tomorrow and likely to start Lupron and Zytiga. I would like to hear the pros and con you have experienced in the different doses of Lupron. One month shot four month etc. Is the Prednizone to deal with the side effects? Thanks for any info.

There is no difference between the 1, 3, 4 or 6 month Lupron shots. However, if it is your first shot you may want to get a three month or shorter one. Just in case you have a very rare bad side effect. The prednisone is taken because the Zytiga shutdowns the adrenal gland which produces prednisone.

I started first with Lupron then a year later started Zytiga. All of the side effects I had were do to the Lupron. That said, the side effects are not that bad. Definitely no reason not to take hormonal therapy. After all, ADT treatment has one good side effect, life. Hard to bet that! Last year I still rode my bikes 1000 miles and went on two caribbean Scuba trips, even on hormonal therapy.

Good luck. Please remember that people like us we have to stick together!

Thank you for the response. I like the idea of the one month shot, at least at first. I had been following a slowly rising PSA after RP and radiation in early 2014. It had reached 2 in Nov 2017. My MO thought we could wait until PSA reached about 10 to start ADT. I got a second opinion from a MO that specializes in Prostate cancer. He suggested I have a gallium 68 radiotracer pet scan done at UCLA medical center as part of a clinical trial. It showed I had slight to mild PSMA hot spots in the lungs and a biopsy of them showed the cancer had spread. Long story short, I am now a big fan of second opinions.

Good luck to us all. God bless

The use of Lupron and Zytiga (with prednisone) could offer you great results! Here are some references.

Hi Dr Who,

I will start Zytiga with prednisone tomorrow. Only checking which dose should be better.

The oncologist recommend 1000mg of Zytiga daily with 5mg prednisone twice a day .

On Lupron and Zytiga for two months. PSA down from 485 to 3.1! Tremendously effective. I am Stage 4 with 6 mets. Lymph nodes near prostate have been reduced in size. Oncologist wants to do RT to Prostate. I am not convinced this is necessary at this time. Very hopeful.

It seems to me that recent posts here and elsewhere strongly support a round of chemo before starting ADT may be helpful long-term. Others here would know and there have been numerous posts on other PC sites. Why not take advantage of the latest treatment? Too late for me.

I was on intermittent Lupron for several years, then added casodex, went on every three months Lupron 3 years ago and when PSA got to 13 in Oct/17 added Zitiga PSA yesterday was 0.16. so its working great. side effects--extreme fatique, swollen elbow for 2 months, borderline high blood sugar (now controlled with diet)t side effects

Have you and your new MO discussed a cycle of chemotherapy before starting the Zytiga? Some recent trial data shows that sequence to be effective. My husband had six cycles of Taxotere before starting on Zytiga. The Taxotere shrunk the lymph nodes and stopped progression of bone metastasis and took his PSA to undetectable levels.

Wishing you the best, whatever you do!

G. For me I have been on lupron now for 18 months. The pro is that my PSA is .005. The cons are loss of body muscle mass, and my manhood. But I’m alive so that’s what’s important to me 😜😜😜😜

Kip here... I'm on Lipton shots, every 120 days. My Doc suggested I consider combo Lupron & Zitega. I opted to only go w/Luoron. After 2 rounds of Lupron, the Doc is impressed with my last bone scan. Says the Cancer is disappearing from everywhere! He even said he thought i made the right decision!! .. The Hot/cold flashes are coming less often & aren't so severe. I'm going to continue on with only the Lupron for now. i go back the end of March for my 3rd shot of Lupron. We'll keep you all posted. K&M
