I am undertaking further study on a course that depends heavily on lengthy written assignments. I am finding it impossible to synthesise material and to organise my thoughts in coherent sentences on paper. (You would never think that I am qualified to teach English!). This is causing me immense distress. If anyone has experienced this difficulty and has found a way around it or can point me to resources I would be really grateful. I had placed my hope on stimulant medication but I reacted badly to it.

Ironically, I can write short communications like this, reasonably well, and I am baffled by my inability to produce longer pieces.

Hey Mstislav. I know that feeling.

Firstly your uni/college could be providing support if you have been diagnosed. This may be available through your student centre, so please make sure you ask.

Secondly, you’ll find that the way you describe working makes mind mapping software a good fit for you. It will allow you to collect your thoughts as separate branches, write notes for each component and then organise when ready. Most will allow you to output to a word document. Again, as a student you’re likely to get help through your uni but also may get discount on software if you have to buy it.

Alternatively try something like scrivener which is designed for book writing but you can do sections and reorder as needed. Use the website ‘alternatives to’ which might list some free alternatives for both options.

Also use additude mag (online) they have a lot of tips which can help for studying.

Don’t give up - it’s just a case of finding what works.
