NHS couch to 5k is free and motivational. You don’t have to run it. Depending on where you are in your fitness journey you can walk/walk a bit faster or rest and walk.
It’s good because it sets a 30 min time limit for your session, so you don’t go wild and injure yourself and the commentary supports you so you are less likely to give up after 5 mins, we have all done that!
Don’t be put off by the 5k in 30 mins tag and the 9 week time frame. I think it is optomistic for many people.. When you are starting, you will get all the health benifits even if you do 3k in an hour or 5k in 2 hours or even 1k with a sit down half way through, it’s about building routine and confidence in your body and finding enjoyment in movement.
Hope this helps
Hi and welcome to the crew. There is a 1000 mile challenge you can join. It’s online or in the walking magazine. I didn’t join the challenge online but I am still doing it with Strava and Garmin writing down the miles on a chart.
Welcone! So glad you joined!
For walking, here are the following ideas for apps.
1️⃣ NHS: First of course there is the free NHS Walking app associated to this forum and that encourages you to do 10 min of active walking one to three times a week, depending on your fitness. It’s where many of us have started. nhs.uk/better-health/get-ac...
After that there are many independent choices, so here is my selection of favourite apps I’ve used to encourage my walking;
2️⃣ Virtual Challenges: The Conqueror - Distance based challenged supported by a brilliant app that has google maps integrated. This also has Lord of the rings. The challenges are quite pricey, like a real race entry, but the medals are some of the most beautiful designed ones on the market. Www theconqueror.events but you can also download the app and buy challenges from within the app,
3️⃣ Mapping: For finding great walks, I also use AllTrails App but for general mapping use my trusty app called Footpath is in constant use. The paid subscription has OS maps, which is key if you’re living in the UK.
4️⃣ Play, listen, immerse: When finding more playful, immersive experiences for getting out walking, the following might be fun to try:
- Stride is a walking game, setting you up to ‘conquer’ your region by walking it.
- The Walk - is a story based game that provides a story for the miles walked. It’s produced by the same people that developed the Zombies, Run app.
- Parkrun app if you Parkwalk.
Hope that helps a bit with keeping your motivation up!
