Walking, motivation and ripped jeans

How has everyone’s motivation been in this heat?

Well, mine have been a bit on the back burner. With all my rowing and returning to running a couple of times a week, I’m fitting in a walk only on the weekend.

And then only a very short walk. But at least I take my Nordic Walking poles out for a spin, and I’m still fascinated by how hard a workout those walks become!

But the less I walk, the more my lovely hubby seems to get out there. Always in the early morning, and thanks to my recommendation of Stride (link here healthunlocked.com/active10... ), he has become the king of our town.

The last hexagons to be conquered with this app cost him his jeans and resulted in ripped holes and scraped arms. The never-ageing boy had to just climb over that one fence to reach that particular field, to cover that last hexagon to become the ultimate king of the town!

I thought I was motivated, but that’s real dedication to walking. (Or is it just the desire to have it all?) .

So, what has everyone else been up to?

Have you found some new routes? Have you ripped any trousers whilst climbing stiles? Or have you just had some of those lovely, peaceful energy-giving meandering walks that give you back more energy than you spend?

Hi mostly do same routes in morning midweek just to time it for work whether 4 km or even a 30 min walk. If I am short of my number and near home I will jog around the school playing fields. At work try and vary but not to the extent of your hubby torn jeans , mines mostly walking in dog poo that u can’t see under leaves 🙁. I prefer early as dont like the heat for walking in too much, used to I do t know what’s wrong with my body. Joints more sore, etc fingers with heat. A different walk in approximately 10 days time going south on holiday so might have different pictures. Love reading your different posts . Think I have toned up in the walking I’ve been doing . Mr D thinks u don’t loose weight just walking, think more for fitness walking whereas I would think you would loose the weight running , mines is mostly about toning . As long as you enjoy it . 😀

Ohh, now that’s another lurking danger: dog poo. 🤣 And I think you would definitely loose weight walking (if you eat healthily, that is, and if you don’t have a thyroid condition like I do, which just grabs hold of that weight and keeps it on no matter what!! 🤣🤣 Exasperating! )

And with this km under your belt, I’m pretty sure you will have toned up!

Sounds like you’ll have some new routes to explore soon on your holiday! Fabulous!

I do think you lose weight while walking, as long as you eat healthy too. We have this radio show presenter who lost a looot of weight a couple of years back just by walking. He gained it back in the meanwhile (don't think he still walks). But you won't lose weight with only short walks like I do though.

So as for me, I do try to do a short walk every day of 30 minutes. Except eg. when having to queu in the car inspection row. Did not had time for even 30 minutes that day.

I guess that is not fully true. Everybody can fit in 30 minutes. It was getting up at 5:45 - work - car inspection - eat - wash up - play with cat - meditate and then I plop on the couch. I could do a 30 minute walk before plopping on the couch. But I am not there yet, my laziness surpasses the walking desire still 😂

That said, I do am looking for something to divert my attention when walking on the treadmill. A 30 min walk seems too short to dabble with my tablet to watch something and I am a little bored of my audiobooks. Last time I put some music on a sang along (OMD if you need to know). But I am wondering - for those using a treadmill - what you all do whilst on the treadmill.

I don’t have a treadmill but I have hooked up my indoor rowing machine to Zwift. And that has a whole lovely runner community using Zwift for training various distances to run.

Also to note, if you only run on Zwift (without cycling) then it is free.

ZLDR have a Facebook group with knowledgable people on how to hook up a treadmill to Zwift.

Just look for ZLDR Zwift long distance runners.

And they do 30min, 60 min, 5k, 10k, and 21k runs on treadmills on Zwift.

That might be an option, but it does take a bit of tech.

Unfortunately I don't have good internet in my treadmill room. Also the reason I don't want to fiddle with my tablet, because it takes a while and lots of struggling to get some internet signal there.

Was thinking about some way to watch tv, but got no connection there. And also don't want to spend lots of time to put something up. I want to be able to just hop on and hop off when I want without having to spend extra time around it.

Yeah. Understandable. That’s the advantage of having our rower in the guest bedroom.

I think if I were in your position, I would look into some great podcasts. And you can download them ahead. There are a few about walking, also fiction, true-crime. I listen to a lot of politics podcasts and if I weren’t busy Zwifting, that would probably be my first choice.

Also, all classic books have been read into downloadable audio books. Look for the “Gutenberg” app. Again, download when you have Wi-Fi and then you can listen.

In terms of films, if you have a YouTube subscription, you can download rather than stream. I don’t so don’t know how well this works.

Just some tech ideas.

I know how boring inside “just running” or “just rowing” can be, especially when one is used to running outside. But with tech help, I’ve found it immensely motivating and enjoyable.

When I was using my exercise bike a few years ago but now used mostly as clothes horse, I used to hook my iPad onto bike and cycle . I watched Sky tv we have the cinema channel or the news or Arts which has various things on it which I like Andre Rieu in his concerts, and now when walking I listen to various podcasts the free version on Spotify.
