Toe issue brusing not going away sore

I banged my big toe nearly a year ago on a sundowner I got a bruised toe nail from it normal bruise but it still hadn't gone and now turned yellow in colour the nail feels really thick. I always get problems with this toe I had a horrendous ingrowing toe nail about 5yrs ago but this big toe on this foot always gets a little sore I think it seems slightly bigger than the other so certain shoes irritate it and I do walk quite heavy on my feet (not overweight) I've started to put witch hazel on it if I'm honest I've kind of just left it to do it's own thing but if I am active bending walking etc it kind of flares up red angry but then goes again. Any suggestions ?
