Starting NHS weight loss plan next week....any tips for me??? Got 5+ stone to lose

My advice to anyone starting would be to find out your BMI and make a decision as to how much weight you intend to lose.

Then have a good read up about eating, weight loss and exercise and all those things. An excellent place to start is the NHS live well lose weight pages and of course, these blogs too and, amongst those I include the 12 week plan. Remember all of that advice and information - including the 12 week plan - doesn't cost you a penny.

Then make yourself a personal plan. Mine was really simple - I just chucked the 'naughties' out of my food intake, got to grips with the idea of what a portion (really) is, got on top of the idea of snacking (not grazing) and upped the exercise.

But make a plan that will fit your lifestyle and personality and then make a commitment to stick with it for 12/13 weeks, as a starting point.

And then it's all about you - realistically, it's only you who will cause you to lose weight.

Remember, fatty and high-calorie foods do NOT make people fat. It's the people EATING them that makes them fat!

I also think setting yourself a realistic target and some milestones helps. Finally, don't try to lose weight TOO quickly. Averaging out at about 1kg (2.2lbs) a week is about the most that is recommended, though you'll probably lose weight quicker than that at first. You didn't gain that weight over a couple of weeks, so you won't lose it that way either. Go for the long term lifestyle change rather than the 'quick-fix'. See it as an investment in you - your health, your body and your future quality of life.

Beyond that, take in a deep breath and get on the weight-loss bus.

If you have underlying medical issues then check with your doctor as to how those issues may impinge upon your weight loss efforts and vice versa.

I would say you should try to get rid of the cakes, biscuits and crisps from your kitchen, and any other very high calorie foods that you feel you can't manage sensibly. Always try to eat breakfast. If you don't, you will get too hungry by lunch time and will tend to overeat.

There is always plenty of helpful advice on here. If you put forward a question, you will soon get an answer to your problem.

I have started today and would ideally like to lose 3.5 stone (I could probably lose 4.5 but will start with that). Last night I went through my cupboards, freezer and fridge and threw out 2 black bags full of food, snacks, treats and such like that I know will either tempt me or are wrong food choices. It would be nice to have some slimming buddies that can understand whats going on with the good days and the bad. Good Luck everyone.

It may seem hard at first, but it will get easier.

Make sure you have healthy snacks available for if you get hungry and drink plenty of water. Water has no calories and also helps with hunger pangs.

I've found that the bulk of my calories comes from whatever carbs I have for tea: rice, pasta, potatoes etc. You'd be surprised how much is in a portion. Try cutting down and filling up on veg instead. Cabbage is good because it hardly has any calories in it.

Also try to exercise and get into a routine with it. Once you are in a routine you can build up the amount you do every week. Everybody is doing it a different way on here: I'm a gym bunny, but most are doing exercise at home, or swimming or classes or just working exercise into their daily routine.

I agree with comments so far. I've also found that drinking soda water (or green tea) instead of snacking helps and so does having an apple for 11am or 3pm breaks if the hunger pangs strike!

Hi,

I'm starting this on Sunday and have 8 stone to lose and I have to lose this as my health is suffering terribly. At my hospital appointment my consultant asked if I wanted to have a gastric band, I refused outright and cried all the way home. I have tried many diets and have never really calorie counted. I have been trying this week to cut down and have also found green tea with Lemon helpful, lots of water, hot sugar free juice nice if you get a sweet craving. Would love to keep in touch with anyone having a go to spur each other on. Good luck Nursejojo and everyone else :)

Now it's funny you should mention green tea - and actually so did johnsonfamily38 above - because I'm quite a fan of green and also white tea. They've gots lots of antioxidants in them and allegedly help the body to burn fat.

Now that claim may be total codswallop - someone else will have to work out the science (or otherwise) of it. But I happen to like them anyhow, so I'm not that bothered if they don't. Whichever way - as I have them just the way they are - they don't contain any calories at all.

Snacking is pretty important though Try as much as possible to not go more than about 3 or 4 hours without anything to eat. That helps to stop the blood sugar from dropping too low and prompting the body into fat storage mode.

Hi,

Set your goals sensibly aim for half stone weight loss at a time rather than the 8 you need to loose.

When your cutting down food you can eat tastes all the better so things you wouldn't normally think of eating like raw carrots or celery etc will take on a whole new taste sensation and there virtually no calories plus the goodness they hold vitamins and fibre

I havent yet hun....got so many Birthdays this month including my own I wanted to get Feb out of the way 1st & start fresh in March.

I shall be keeping everyone updated with my weight loss...... I hope it goes well for you. Done many diets, Herbalife most recently & found it very difficult to maintain a high preotein diet with no carbs.

If theres any tips you can give me...or receipes etc that wd be a great help....I shall post bk in return.

Hello everybody,

I've got 5st+ to lose as well. I want to go walking and explore the countryside round North Wales. I already do a bit but it would be so much more satisfying to be able to go up a hill without stopping every 20 feet.

I'm a lover of green tea too. Not so much cause it's good for me. I just like it. Given how much tea I can drink in a day it saves me a fortune in calories!!

I will be starting on Monday. I plan to check out the site and start maybe planning some easy to make meals and snacks for work so I'm not having to think on the run so much.

Hi - I too have 5+ stone to lose. I think the advice and support on here is wonderful and also thankfully, realistic. We got ourselves here and we basically have to get ourselves back down to what we should be. In my experience as a woman over the age of 50 shifting this weight is so much harder than when I was in my 20s and 30s and to add insult to injury it is probably more dangerous to be carrying this weight in my 50s.

I don't want to go on with creaking joints and expending the effort to get this body in and out of chairs etc.. and it's like someone said on here the only person who can make a commitment to changing it is me. The high fat, high sugar foods will always be there and I can't "moan away" their existence.

So good luck to both of us (and all of us) with our endeavours to lose weight - I hope I haven't hijacked your posting with my rant!
