Keto diet and intermittent Fasting

I was surprised that there is no mention of Keto diet(fats, lots of green veg and moderate meat, some berries) mixed with intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting. Drinking weater with electrolytes(potassium, good salt) and magnesium via skin when not eating manages hunger and as carbs are very low one is not very hungry after a while.

Having researched this for a few months my impression is that the best results and lasting life changing results are achieved with this approach.

Why is NHS advice always lagging behind with newest research and knowledge?

I wanted to encourage a friend to try this but there is no mention on it on here?

Anyone wishing to lose weight and improve your health please look into this but do proper research. Anything worth doing needs to be done properly. Good Luck on your journey to wellness.

I think you’ll find there are dozens of mentions of keto on here! I agree that NHS advice lags behind latest thinking on healthy eating, but if you read on down through the posts here, you will find most of us here are very well informed. No one here is a professional however - this is a members’ support forum, moderated by volunteers who are not experts.

Hi, Labud , welcome.

Many of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:

healthunlocked.com/fasting-...

The keto diet is excellent is you have acute diabetes, cancer etc., but most of us can lose weight and prevent or reverse diabetes on a Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet. See:

healthunlocked.com/fasting-...

I put a teaspoon of pink Himalayan salt in my green tea every morning, and take magnesium to prevent cramp. I eat bananas - and hope that they give me adequate potassium.

I think that the NHS likes to think that it bases its advice on evidence bases research - the trouble is that most research is biased (you need to see who funded it) and the dietary guidelines are based on Ancel Key's biased study, in which he "cherry-picked" the data from seven countries out of the 21 countries for which data was available.

Hello and welcome, Labud 😊

I don't think you've looked far enough. There may not be many members maintaining a keto approach as that's pretty restrictive but there are many low carbers here. There's also a LCHF forum if you'd like to introduce yourself there.

This is a busy place with loads of support and information to help you on your way and we've put everything you need into this Welcome Newbies post. healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... I recommend joining a weekly weigh in on the day of your choice, and using the Daily Diary, where members log their meal plans and get useful feedback.

Please also read this information about security/privacy, especially as you have left your post unlocked healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

To make the most of the forum, join in with activities, read and reply to posts, ask questions and encourage others – it will all pay off for you 😊

It's true that the NHS 12 week plan does not promote a LCHF approach to weight-loss but many people on this forum agree with you that it works for them. I'm sure you'll find lots of LCHF support and information here.

I tried keto and yes it is good , it's. Very disciplined way of eating long term. I have done a lot of research myself on this, and a low carb is defiantly the way to go. Learnt a lot about blood sugar and insulin etc etc along the way so I have a better understanding of foods which spike you blood sugar . Foods that will leave you starving after only an hour of two etc etc. I understand all that and yet I still cannot stop completely eating junk food and sugar .......I do try on the whole to eat low carb but it's so hard.

Why look at any of these fad diets when the Mayo Clinic diet is so helpful for a lifetime of living. Many people, for various reasons, cannot cope with fasting. First thing anyone should do is cut out sugar, which can be found in almost all processed foods.

Good question. The NHS is very coy about providing answers. I asked them about it once and they sent me a document written by think-tank, containing "evidence" for their low-fat caloric restriction approach. They do have a Low-Carb Programme for diabetics, but it amounts to little more than an app. Most doctors are still sticking with the old advice - apart from Dr David Unwin and his colleagues, who are doing a sterling job of getting the right info out there.

As others have mentioned, many of us here are actually doing some variant of low-carb ... because it works.
