Feeling desperate!!

I dont really know what to say or were to start, I don't even think anyone can help. I am morbidly obese with 3 boys at secondary school and an amazing husband, I know I need to lose weight as I don't want to die but I am struggling so much. I know no one can do it for me but I just feel so lost with it all. I have struggled with my weight all of my adult life and have tried pretty much every diet. I'm obsessed with what I eat but this has a real negative effect on my mindset and in turn what I eat. I just don't know what to do, I went to my gp in January 2023 who referred me to weight management services at the hospital but I'm still waiting now. I am constantly trying to improve my diet but it's just a vicious circle. I need to lose half of myself in an ideal world but anything to make me healthier would be a start. Has anyone out there that has lost vast amounts ? I'm just so low and don't know where to turn 😢😢

Hello, Pixie82, I'm so pleased you've rejoined us :)

This must seem insurmountable right now and I'm sure you've tried a million times before to lose weight. I'm going to tag a couple of members who have lost a lot of weight and may be able to give you come encouragement that it can be done, and it can be maintained  moreless  springersrule They probably won't be around this evening but they will get back to you in the next day or so.

Meanwhile, I'm going to give you a couple of things to look at - real food, home cooked, and if you stick to it, it can reduce your craving for things you know won't do you any good.

Hi Pixie82, I was at my wits end with my weight when I first found this website. Years of trying different diets, losing some weight then regaining more than I’d lost had made me obese and without hope of ever changing that. Good advice here and joining the regular weighin groups for mutual moral support made the difference - but the specific key to change, for me, was rethinking about foods that I ate. Sugar and carbs became my no go area instead of my previous low fat existence, avoiding processed food whenever possible. I found that I was eating tastier meals, feeling satisfied, not hungry and angry, and my weight and size reduced. Have a look at low carb or LCHF advice as you may find it will suit you, but unfortunately it might be difficult to get three teenage boys to follow it with you at home! But on the other hand, if they start to think now about what the world is currently offering them in the way of nutrition as the norm (burgers and chips?) they might avoid having problems themselves as they get older. Best of luck!

Yes it can, slow and steady, but certainly join in the forums with others who are also trying to lose some. ( I’m pretty much staying at same weight at the moment so just bob onto the website now and again so that I stay aware of what I SHOULD be doing 🤣) x

Hi Pixie 82, I’m so sorry to hear how desperate you are feeling with your weight and I know how hard it is to get your head around focussing on yourself when you have teenage boys and all the demands that entails. I was also very obese at one time, although I mostly dealt with it by pretending I didn’t care. Anyway long story short I joined weightwatchers. It wasn’t a quick fix, 1 or 2 lbs at a time, lots of plateaus, and quite a few gains and diappointments, but what I got from there was I learnt to focus on myself. I got lots of support from people who really understood how hard it is, and I made some lovely lifelong friends. I started to exercise, realising that noone was ridiculing me in my swimsuit because they were all too concerned with their own bodies. I talked to my family and asked them to be supportive. I had my own food cupboard of things which they learnt were my ’treats’ and they weren’t to help themselves. I joined the gym which was very nervewracking but again realised that at least half the people there were elderly people recovering from various ills. The trainers were so supportive too. It took me about 2 years to get to ’gold’ which is my healthy weight. I’m not perfect which is why I’m here -my weight goes up a bit from my ideal sometimes but I have the tools now to nip it in the bud before I go too overboard.I can honestly say it changed my life and even gave me the tools to deal with lifes knocks by always taking a little ’me time’ without feeling guilty.

I know you’re waiting for weightloss management but my understanding is that you will still have to go through the process of learning to eat better, which is kind of what the slimming clubs do too. If you do join up go to the meetings every week whether you’ve had a good week or not, and always stay for the talk.

You can do this.

Thank you for your advice I have tried ww and I'm currently at sw but I honestly believe until I can change wants going on in my head I will struggle to succeed. I haven't waited for the weight management-I constantly try and battle with my weight just right now it feels never ending x
