Hi All

I belong to the RLS group on here snd have found it beyond helpful. I thought I might try you guys too.

I am currently dealing with RLS (restless leg syndrome) which has affected my sleep for over a year. Coupled with menopause, I’ve seen my weight increase despite eating well 80% of the time.

I truly do not recognise myself anymore, confidence is rock bottom and, until I get my other health problems sorted, I fear things will continue.

My main issue is all the information out there. Whole foods? Low fat? IF? Full fat? Help!!!’

I want to find something that works without joining another slimming club

Hope I can find the answers within this community

Hello careerSquirrel, and welcome to Weight Loss support

I'm sorry you're feeling so down at the moment. Lack of sleep can definitely contribute to low mood, as can menopause, so double whammy! However, support is at hand. We have a lovely community here and whilst we don't offer professional advice, I can say with confidence that there will be members on here who have gone through, or are going through, similar issues.

All of our current groups are listed here: healthunlocked.com/weight-l...

Daily Diary and the Weekly Weigh In might be the best place to start in finding people who can offer you the benefit of what has been working for them.

Have a look around, pop a reply onto one of the groups I've mentioned and see what happens.

I wish you all the best in conquering the things that are troubling you and finding the lovely confident you that's currently hiding!

I am 63 and it is amazing how that 20% of not eating properly really affects people of our age . I have to do a lifetime eating plan of simply 3 meals a day and no snacks . It is difficult at first and I distract by exercise or even a walk round garden , library etc . It is the snacks that pile on weight . I try to keep to a max of 1600 cals which is pretty high but ensures that I get 3 sound meals . Fruit tea is getting better especially the berry ones . Sip low cal hot choc if by 9pm you just can’t resist something otherwise 7pm the kitchen is closed . This works better for me rush any unsustainable low this no carbs that and is easier to choose if you go out .

To eat healthily and try to lose some weight, I use an online calorie counter which works, but only when I remember to use it!

Also, a relative introduced me to a useful supplement which has really helped my disturbed sleep….try “magnesium citrate” capsules (buy online), These relax the muscles and prevent twitchy legs, which helps you get a full night’s sleep. They are also good for constipation too as an added benefit!

You will soon feel more normal once the hormones have settled down, and there is always the option of HRT if you still don’t feel right as time goes on.

Thanks for your great advice.

Everyone talks about calorie deficit but then there is a whole other school of thought that says counting calories is a waste of time and it’s all about eating whole foods.

It’s all very confusing to say the least. Do you stick to a caloric amount each day?? Do you mostly follow a low fat diet??

I try to stick to a low fat diet, but my husband prefers a low carb diet, so we chop and change…but if I keep to between 1500 and 1700 calories a day, I can lose weight. I swim once a week too, and walk the elderly dogs for 30mins a day. Sensible eating and regular exercise is a way of life which I still struggle to keep to at times!

welcome to the forum. I also get restless legs. I have given up refined sugar except on very special occasions and eat four small meals a day with fruit inbetween if hungry. I have lost 5 stone. I also attend overeaters anonymous meetings for added support and guidence. In over eaters anonymous you aim to eat normally rather than diet. I have heard it said in the groups that if a very thin person with anorexia starts to eat normally they will put on weight untill they become a normal size and that it is also true that if an over weight person starts to eat a normal healthy diet they will lose weight. until they become a normal size. The problem will diets of any kind is the lack of sustainability due to under eating
