A new randomised study comparing diets
I feel what is missing here is whether the participants in this study actually could maintain the weight lost . Put anyone on modified eating 'diet' especially if obese and obviously there will be results . I love food and I don't want it ever to control me . I can have a day where I am up at 6.40 , start work at 8 , half hour lunch and finish around 6.15 x 4 days a week . Would low carbs where I would be hungry with low mood all day suit me or could I sustain this ? Honestly - no as running round after toddlers all day , pushing 8 of them in a contraption like a tank then lunchtime can actually be spend doing paperwork . Just the example of how low carbs wouldn't suit me . I need porridge every morning . I look forward to a cooked evening meal - again carbs.
My weight loss is down to finding what I can eat without punishment , that I can stick to . I do Zumba x3 x 1 hour . I walk not counting being on my feet almost 10 hours - at least 3x10000 steps and I ran 10k in less than 1.30 which is supposed to be OK for a 63 year old woman . I love to see research but like most of it I studied years ago it is inconclusive as it is usually not followed up . As a teenager I was 46kg , a gymnast drinking Slimfast shakes which were the trend of the time . Could I drink that stuff now ? No .
I can't disagree with the outcomes and findings but whether psychologically this eating plan is beneficial I am unsure as most people with a social life eat and drink out .
As far as low carb not sustaining you, that is surely a matter of the calories. I have done 50 mile bike rides on no breakfast with no problem because I am fat adapted.
I saw a Slimfast advert on tv the other day and immediately went to look for the ingredients. The number one on the ingredients list was sugar 😂
Would they maintain the weight loss? Yes if they maintained the diet, which would be easy because you don't need to restrict calories to be on a low carb diet.
Each to their own but I feel as a woman too I am obviously different hormone wise. I do think post menopause I need food before I go to work . I drive in heavy traffic .walk 15 mins and then it is no break for 5 hours so I imagine I could cycle 50 miles if pushed with nothing to eat but why? I do an hours Zumba in a morning with sips of water but I am very near to the kitchen . Like others mention there are flaws in all research . What you do clearly works for you but in our family we are all quite sporty but we all eat 3 meals a day including porridge made with water , full fat Greek yogurt and fruit with a mug of coffee . You go with low carbs . We like carb rich veg . Whatever we are doing wrong ? we are all healthy with demanding lives and varied exercise .
There are a couple of points here for me. 1:is that the study was partially in lockdown (which affected lots of people diet wise)
2: for 4 months only , whose to say what happened long term
3:DASH was stated in the study as vastly reducing BP but, this is not flagged so much
4:vegetarians and vegans were excluded from the study. On this last point, I had this on my news feed hours after reading this post !

Ha, ha. You don't believe the Dail Mail do you? Cholesterol is not a marker of bad health as the body needs it to transport fatty acids to the organs in the aqueous blood stream, the only bad cholesterol is small dense LDL. for which there's no test. High cholesterol is linked to longer life according to statistics.
If you don't believe me check out the video "Dr. Paul Mason - 'The truth about high cholesterol'" on you tube. or Dr Robert Lustig "Understand Your CHOLESTEROL PANEL & Metabolic Health Tests - The ULTIMATE Guide" or "Cardiologist on the Over-Prescribing of Statins for Heart Disease" also on Youtube.
Wow. I simply shared a link that appeared in my news feed. Did you take the time to read it at all before you decided to laugh at my input? I read your link which prompted me to comment.
I do however like how you belittle my link by directing me to YouTube where you can post what you like, to see "the truth" about high cholesterol.
My brother in law just had two heart attacks in April and had stents fitted and was told he needed to reduce his fat intake. His medical team who are supporting him and are invested in his recovery told him this.
I don't think it is the paper it is written in as it could have been published in so many different media sources . My husband has epilepsy superbly controlled with drugs but these have side effects such as a fatty liver similar to that of an alcoholic if he doesn't watch his fat intake it would be worrying with advice from a specialist consultant to keep cholesterol under 5 . This he does and has felt better for it . 7lbs shed effortlessly as I shopped and cooked with meals planned . 7lb less around his stomach / heart .
You are different in that you seem to be able to exercise easily but some can't . I would rather balance my food . Carbs , fat , protein and simple macro percentages have guided us. If I live a healthy life - lets say 88+ then I think I will write MY guide to a long life coz that is what we all strive for . You have given me food for thought but not really to eat.
Thanks will look but my husband was put on statins by a consultant and told to cut down on fats . Whatever he is doing is working . Maybe there are more issues with the drugs .I haven’t studied medicine and I find a lot of on line articles incomplete and too general
Y ou may be interested in this video "Cardiologist on the Over-Prescribing of Statins for Heart Disease"on youtube . Inflammation can be caused by the consumption of refined carbohydrates so if your husband changes his diet he may not need statins.
