Hello,

I haven’t posted on here for a while but have a question.

Since November (apart from Christmas) I have lost 1st from a combination of fasting every day into 1p.m, twice a week until 7p.m and follow a generally low carb diet (not keto). I eat masses of veg, low sugar fruits, no bread, virtually no potatoes, 2-3 days of no meat, occasional wholewheat or whole grain pasta, nuts, avocados and some oily fish. I walk for an hour nearly every day, garden, housework, etc. Everything I have read says all of that should lower my BP and cholesterol levels. But no - LDL has risen and BP. Oh, and I’m 70 next month. I’m flummoxed!

I'm certainly no expert, TheJazzSinger, but I would say that's good news about your cholesterol. Higher levels as we age are associated with longer life sciencedaily.com/releases/2...

Do you take your own BP, or was it a one-off at the doctor's surgery? If so, were you rushed, stressed, anxious? All of those things need to be taken into account.

I suffer from white coat syndrome, which puts my BP through the roof, but when I take it at home, it's actually on the low side.

Thank you moreless. Yes I have white coat too! I’ve been taking it at home over the past 10 years - usually first thing and around 7 or 8 in the evening. I am on a mild anti-hypertensive but don’t think it works very well. Re the cholesterol - I have read that because fat cells are reducing you release fat/cholesterol into the bloodstream and that can put it up but I don’t know it that’s true. I’ve always had a high HDL which is now 2.39 and over the normal threshold and my LDL is now 4.11 which also higher than before the diet. Interestingly low carb has not reduced my HBA1c which was 38 and is still 38 now.

Why not post this on the LCHF forum, you may get a more knowledgeable response? I, personally, would just ignore the cholesterol readings. You could also post your menus on the Daily Diary so that we can offer more informed advice.

I am certainly no doctor but those figures don't seem so bad to me, certainly less than mine :) I believe higher HDL is good. Maybe ask on the LCHF group where there are some knowledgeable folks :)
