I’m not a big drinker but I’m partial to something on the weekend. It’s generally a dark beer, the sort you can spread on toast, or a heavy red wine. To accompany this I normally eat savory snacks.
I’ve spent the morning researching and the truth is I don’t want to make buffalo chicken wings with a delightful dip. An olive spread with an assortment of chargrilled vegetables is not my thing. It’s not that I can’t cook, I love to cook, but on a Saturday night I want to put my hand in the cupboard and bring out a family bag sized something I can nibble on. I don’t mind something that takes five minutes prep, but I also don’t want to spend £20 on a bag of spiced chickpeas I can make myself quickly and for 20p.
What do you guys each for when it is savory snack time please?
Ps please don’t think me lazy, but I’m a foster parent with two kids of our own. One of the boys disabilities are off the wall, so cooking is something I love to do to give my mind somewhere else to go. I just don’t want to do it at 9pm on a Saturday night if he has decided to sleep.
PPS my wife is a doctor. She is a little busy with life and viruses these days. Asking her to cook will result in immediate weight loss as she removes bits of my body with a very sharp kitchen knife.
You just need a bag of plain corn kernels (Holland & Barrett sell them by kg), a lidded microwave dish. Put a handful of kernels in the dish, sprinkle with salt and your favourite spices (cayenne pepper is good), if you like a few splash of oil or a few drops of water to help the spices stick to kernels, pop it in the microwave on high and stand by. As the popping starts to slow down, pull it out and transfer to a serving bowl or carefully carry the hot microwave container to the TV.
3 minutes tops.
6g carbs/cup, and practically no calories if you don't include oil - and you don't have to.
Don't buy microwave popcorn, it works no better than this, costs much more and is covered in crap. Prepopped corn is also much more expensive, and not as nice as warm popcorn. 🍿
This is a perfect sort of dish to make it in. Plastic can melt as the kernels get very hot and you can't use oil with a plastic dish.
My problem is with concept of a planned snack. I don't do that anymore. I eat two or 3 planned meals a day, and that's it. If I wanted to sit with a plate savoury food and a beer, I would make that my planned dinner.
If you don't want to do any prep, either visit a deli and get them to make a platter, or buy something like this
“Platter serves ten”. What is my wife supposed to eat?
I think the issue is that with a hectic lifestyle, a Saturday night is usually the only chance we get at any down time. And that is only if the little one sleeps, which with the level of disability and associated needs is not always guaranteed.
We like to eat as a family as often as possible and because of my wife’s job, sometimes we can only manage it on the weekend.
That being said, the idea of getting a platter rather than a bag of crisps is a sensible idea, so thank you.
It's complicated. I hope you can make it work for you. Grazing on food while drinking is a challenge on any diet. Making it great food that you can savour, rather than shovelling handfuls of popcorn makes sense to me.
Me and husband are savory Snack fans and proud (there's only so many things of this healthy eating malarkey we can do - though I write this having a Friday which I'm deleting - too much booze, too many snacks😁).. Am calorie counting so not sure bout the Carb side...
Hi Tubby-one and how's it going? Some of the lines in your messages really make me chuckle ☺️
This is an idea for a carb free snack, but like all these things, has to be eaten in moderation and as subtle_badger points out, it's better to regard snacks as part of a meal, rather than an extra. The following is more-ish, so be warned!
Recipe for keto biscuits:
Mix two cups of almond flour (or ground almonds) with an egg and pinch of sea salt. Give it a good stir. It'll be crumbly, so try rolling it out between some folded greaseproof paper. Cut out circles with pastry cutters. Bake in moderate oven for 12-15 minutes. Cool and store in a kilner jar.
Eat with cheese, peanut butter, jam (tubby54's fave) - preferably not all together! I find they satisfy that urge for something crunchy.
Heading in s slightly different angle, have you tried Brewdog AF IPA. Very low alcohol beer and only 65 calories a bottle. I found in Sainsbury’s and tried as an experiment and was really surprised how drinkable it is. I do like a ‘Proper’ pint but have recently found alcohol beers are massively better than in the past (take a look at drydrinker.com). Good luck!

You can buy ready cooked chicken which is marinated and sliced. Salami. I like Lidl’s cheese chilli dip. Quarter of a pot is 3.7g. I have it with radishes or celery.
