Afternoon everyone, I am 47 and struggling a little with increased weight gain. It doesn’t help that I have a sweet tooth, so my starting weight is 76kg, when I retired from hockey 5 years ago I was 78kg my heaviest. I had since lost 14kg, but that’s more or less crept back up. I really would like to lose 12kg to get back where I was, I felt healthy and fitter.
I’m not sure if I am also starting perimenopause which perhaps isn’t helping my cause. So I joined you guys for help & support.

You have come to the right place for information and support 🙂
There are lots of activities on here and I'm sure you will enjoy exploring. The key to success on here is joining in(especially with Daily Diary and a Weekly Weigh In)asking questions and recognising the importance in breaking old habits and looking afresh at our food choices.
This link following takes you to our Pinned Posts section in which you will find a Welcome message and guide to our site plus links to other groups on here
...it can take a bit to master finding one's way so please read the material carefully.
Please note, don't use the HU App, it is much easier to use the website.
We recommend that members join a Weekly Weigh-In, on the day of your choice, and also use the Daily Diary, where members share their meal plans and get useful feedback. They are found under Pinned Posts (go back to the link I gave you above)
A special feature of our Forum is the degree of support between members which you will experience (and add to yourself !) as you join in and chat with others.
Hi and well done on taking first step by coming here!
You really need to go cold turkey on sugar in all forms .... but if you can't manage that try real dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more). I never used to like it, being used to sweet things, but now find that sucking half a square keeps the sugar urge away!
There are lots of options for losing weight but lets face it mostly it's common sense healthy eating i.e no junk. I follow low carb high fat lifestyle so eat very little bread, spuds, rice, pasta (and gave up beer when losing the weight - now allowed within reason!). I lost 4 stone in 7 months and have kept it off for 15 months now (even during lock-down ... er so far!).
Hope to see you around the forum - lots of support and help here!

Wow that’s great. Yes I feel cold turkey is the way forward. I picked up a niggly injury after racing in Russia, so my activity levels dropped dramatically too. Just starting to get somewhere then we ended up on lockdown 🙄 watch this space, and Thankyou for your reply 👌🏼
Oat milk is not recommended for low carb, but I just looked it up and it's not much different from whole milk, a little more carbs, a little less fat. So if it's working for you, keep going.
Well I’m trying dairy free to be fair as my skin has been pretty bad, Oat milk was the only thing I could tolerate in coffee with out sugar. I’ve shifted from the 74kg that I’ve been stuck at and I’m now 71.5kg not going to lie it’s taken ages, but I’m also running fasted To help burn some fat and not have much carb for breakfast 👌🏼👌🏼
Yeah. I think I am metabolically in the same situation as you. Oh, except I have now lost the weight. It was hard work, and I had to resort to fasting. I want to lose a couple more kg, and I don't think they are going anywhere.
(Oat seems to be the only non-problematic milk, at the moment. Dairy is all sorts of problems, soy is GMO, apparently almond groves are an environmental disaster, and I've just found out I have to worry about monkey labour if I eat coconut 🙄)
That's a spammer. The account will disappear shortly.
But do look at low carb and intermittent . I have only been doing it since December, but I feel it's sustainable in the long term. I think I can avoid the weight "creeping" back, as I think avoiding certain foods is easier than portion control.
And I keep over doing the cheese, and I don't put on weight!
Wahoo Wowsers so I’ve been doing the low carb and intermittent fasting now for just over a month, I put myself into a calorie deficit (however not too low) and I can report that this morning I weighed in at 66.2kg, I’m so chuffed nearly at my target and boy can I feel the difference whilst training too. Thankyou for the idea to try it, it’s the way forward now for sure 👍🏻
that's great results, Can i ask how intense your training is and are you using and plans, i was doing long distance until 3 years ago when i had difficulties breathing on exertion after 3 years of test medical staff seem to think it may be microvascular angina. I have been told to exercise but struggle to run or cycle i struggle to run 1 k at the minute and from what i use to do it sort of deflates you keep trying to find plans but then panic i am going to collapse my weight crept up but managing to lose it now through diet
I kept picking up niggly injuries so my weight crept up, which didn’t help the injuries. My training hours are about 5 hours per week at the mo as I’m rebuilding the engine gradually so nothing too crazy, I’ve just started doing a speed run session once a week, but really enjoying trail and mountain biking. I’m not using plans however I was coached about two years ago so just picking bits out of what I used to do. With no races this year the pressure is off so trying to build my strength up, hope that helps. How fast is your 1km? Mine started really really slow and it’s now gradually getting quicker, just takes time 👌🏼 hope that helps
hi thanks for reply, my 1 k is around 13 minutes which is really frustrating and disheartening as before i started with all this i was doing 5 k in around 25 mins.
swimming i struggle to put two lengths together in old days i would do the 3;8 k in 65 mins, like everyone everything is a challenge now to do anything but we got to keep going.
Just had virtual call with my cardiology team who is looking at increasing my medication to see if this works, they have stated that everything if trial and error to get balance right with my issue.
sun is out today so walk down the canal is on the cards being as im off work.
