Hey everyone

I am new to this programme.

I have over 5and a half stone to loose and just can’t seem to focus. My son gets married in August but I’m scared I won’t be any smaller. Have tried many diets and can’t seem to stick to any of them. Feeling very low and lonely in myself.:-( any support and friendly ears greatly received. X

Hi, Soniaweightloss , welcome.

I lost for and a half stone - but I took ove a year about it.

If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.

Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:

Judging by what you've just said, I think lchf would be perfect for you, the food is lush and you definitely don't go hungry. Google Diet Doctor, it explains it all in great detail, there's even a 2 week free challenge and lots of recpie ideas :-) x

Hello and welcome, Soniaweightloss :)

You have a great motivation to look and feel your best and, as long as you ditch all the diets you've tried in the past, there is no reason you can't see off plenty of that weight between now and August.

I'm going to give you some posts from members who have lost that amount, and more, to give you confidence it can be done.

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Start with fresh food, home cooked, avoid processed stuff - and that includes anything labelled low fat or light or diets as they're all heavily processed. It's probably turning everything you know about dieting on it's head but one thing you know for certain is dieting doesn't work so why not take the plunge. Good, healthy real food you'll enjoy.

This explains further dietdoctor.com/low-carb

I don't want to overload you with information but I want to give you enough to encourage you to believe you can make a change and that it will be enjoyable and successful :)

To make the most of the forum, get involved with out events, challenges and clubs, particularly a weekly weigh-in and the Daily Diary. You'll find them all here in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

I hope you'll become an active member of the forum and make the most of all the information and support :)

It's interesting how our tastes can change. At 68, I'm eating things I "didn't like" for decades! :)

I'm not suggesting keto except as a useful introduction to a low carb approach - perhaps a couple of weeks. I don't think there are many people here who follow a keto way of eating but there are many happy low carbers. There are some pics around 1/3 of this page dietdoctor.com/low-carb headed How low is a low carb diet? and you'll see the difference between ketogenic and low carb approaches :)

Hey Soniaweightloss! Good news! You can do this! I lost six stone in one year and I have a sweet tooth and eat chocolate everyday!

By August you can look and feel very different!

There isn't really a one size fits all solution as everyone here have different stories to tell of how they have lost weight and what works for them. The key is finding what works for you and your lifestyle.

For me exercise was key as dieting alone only got so far and then weight loss would stop and my motivation disappear.

As for diet I didn't want to calorie count at first and did the 5:2 diet. Cutting calories twice a week to just 500. This gave me freedom to eat whatever I wanted the other five days and slowly retrained my mind and body to recognise true hunger over boredom eating.

Later I did switch to calorie counting daily. Use the NHS BMI calculator to work out your calorie allowance because it will reduce slowly as you lose weight instead of trying to cut to quickly to a very low amount!

Making changes slowly is also key. Trying to change all your habits overnight quickly lead to cravings for "normality". Changes made gradually BECOME your new normal!

I am a fussy sweet tooth eater and lost weight whilst eating chips, chocolate, crisps, ice cream etc etc so you CAN eat what you want but just within your calorie limit! You soon learn which foods are high calorie but don't fill you up are wasteful so want to avoid them.

Exercising has the benefit of allowing you more calories than if not exercising! Again, start slowly. I lost weight just brisk walking 30 mins a day. Then I added doing the couch 2 5k program so run three times a week too. Later I added cycling and swimming to change it up a bit.

Aim for an hour's exercise a day! Either in one go or broken up into 3x 20 mins or 2x 30 mins or however you like.

And lastly! Motivate yourself! Browse articles online about the benefits of losing weight, benefits of exercise, recipe ideas etc to keep your willpower up!

As I said... If I can do it I KNOW you can! Guaranteed!

Hey CrimsonMama

Wow thank you so much for commenting.

Wow well done you for loosing 6stone:-) that’s awesome...

I really wish I can find my way to weight loss I really do. It’s so hard to find something that works.

I have gained 5lbs in just one week cos I do slimming world for a week then get bored and they go mad with food. I swear I’m addicted to food:-(

I did my calorie check and it says I have just over 1500 calories a day but I didn’t put down all the exercise I do just a bit of it. I do exercise but just can’t control the food intake!

I’m going to try really hard this week and not weight myself every day! Thank you

I'm currently on 1500 a day!

If you can be healthy about it then GREAT! But I am not a healthy eater .. yet I still lose weight.

For instance my meal and exercise plan today is:

15 mins home aerobics.

A ham and mustard toasted sandwich for breakfast. And one Jaffa cake. (8am)

Three toffees and a can of Coke zero at work (between 10-11am)

2pm a 30 min walk with the dog

4pm half of a chicken chorizo pasta bake ready meal with 20g 50% fat reduced cheese and 147g home made chips.

Butterscotch angel delight pot for pudding.

5pm 30 mins walking on my treadmill whilst watching TV.

6-7pm snack time! 16g from a share bag of crisps. A Turkish delight bar. A smaller crunchie bar (is 122 calories). 2x cheddar biscuits and 2x Jaffa cakes.

Total calories:

1498.

No need to crave naughty food as plenty in there lol.

I'm not saying "eat bad" but I am saying eat WHATEVER you want even if it's bad. Just within your calorie range. I still lose weight! And as I enjoy my food there's no need to "cheat" or feel I'm missing out on treats.

And just for the record I had my cholesterol tested recently and was all good...

Oh and by the way... I weigh everyday but record it once a week as the 'official' number. I find it helps me stay focussed and accountable.
