Hello and welcome Connie, please have a good read through all the information moreless has given you. 😊
Losing our precious family is really difficult, i feel for you ☹️ But try not to hate yourself, the number on the scales is just that, a number, and doesn’t define who you are.
This is a wonderful forum, with lots of help and support. The best advice I was given was not to get too hungry, it’s the single biggest cause of weight loss failure. If you are counting calories then please your calorie target on the NHS BMI checker. Also look at what you are eating. Aw women age, the way our body’s process sugar and carbohydrates changes, turning it to fat more quickly. Fat is no longer believed to be the bad guy, it’s an essential nutrient and essential for satiety. Please read this for a more detailed explanation

I highly recommend the Daily Diary for giving and receiving support and feedback on meal planning (in Events on the forum Homepage healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... )
Good luck!
Hello, Connie, I'm sorry to hear about your mum.
This is a good website for inspiration, I found that if you post your weight regularly each week on a weigh-in day, you get plenty of inspiration from seeing other people's weight loss journeys and lots of encouragement too.
I wish you all the best with your journey and hope to see you around.
Hello Connie2019 .
I'm so sorry you lost your Mum. Many of us on this site will know the pain of losing a parent, also the ways in which we cope with that loss, and those ways are sometimes less than helpful. Climbing out of the pit of bereavement takes time, I know from personal experience; it can't be rushed. Grief seems to have an energy of its own and somehow one has to let it lead you out into the light at its own pace. I personally believe this is the same with losing weight. I don't mean that we have no control when dieting; indeed, we need to make some tough, self-denying decisions and stick to them. But in order to succeed we need to be patient, and be willing to take time in order to succeed permanently - at least, that has been my own experience.
Start an objective food diary. Write down everything you eat and drink, however small, and record the time of day you ate or drank them. Patterns will emerge so that you can view your own habits, some of which may surprise you. Snacking needs to go, as do the bad foods which are addictive to you. For me, chocolate is my major addiction; I've been indulging that over Christmas and it has to go now, as does drinking wine every day. Only you can identify your Naughty Foods and Drinks, and then you will have complete control over how you tackle doing without those. It's fatal to try to ban them all at once. Take one and do without it for a week or two. Only when you have control over that and are used to doing without it it, should you identify another and ban that from your life. You can do this but please treat it as a long, calm journey into the light, like moving from grief to acceptance and happy memories. We learn to eat badly as a life-process, and we should undo that as a process too.
Please also exercise every day, even if you don't feel like it. Walk, and do it as briskly as you can, or if it's raining put something daft or beneficial on from Youtube or ITunes or Spotify and jiggle about for half an hour. The pheromones released will help you with your emotions as well as your calorie burning.
All good luck on this New Year enterprise. There are many people here on HU travelling the same roads. You are not alone.
love Betty x
Sorry to hear about your Mum, this might be of interest to you?x
Hi Connie2019
Sorry about the loss of your mum.
You have contacted a great website and forum, help is at hand here and good luck
Hi, Connie2019 , welcome.
I gained another stone or so after my wife died - and, before I got to 70, I was down to my target weight. I have now lost four and a half stone.
If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.
Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:
Hi Connie,
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I'm a new member here and I read your post before joining as it really resonated with me (I lost my Mum recently) and also have two stone (plus) to lose.
I was wondering how you were doing?
Hi, just joined (again). I've gained 2.5 stone over the last 4 years, I've been taking steroids for this length of time and everyone says that's the problem - it isn't! I'm not very mobile now but am eating (and drinking) too much. I can walk but because of a back problem can't walk far. I know all the rules to healthy eating but don't follow them. I know just how you feel, I hate the look of myself and know it's my own doing. I'm sure you can do this Connie, you're still fairly young, I'm 74 and it's tempting to say 'at my age it doesn't matter' but it does to me. Let's give it a good go and see how we get on. Good luck x
Hi and welcome, Pat46
Unfortunately you've posted on an old thread and it's unlikely you'll get a response from the original poster.
I think you're being too hard on yourself, there are several reasons why taking steroids can cause weight gain, have a look at this healthline.com/health/stero...
You say you know the rules to healthy eating, but ideas have changed a lot in the last few years and I wonder if you've kept abreast of them? Have a look at these healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and healthunlocked.com/api/redi...

Hello Connie,
Sorry to hear you lost your Mum. I put on a stone and a half after having a hysterectomy.
11 weeks ago I started Couch to 5k, watching portion sizes, cutting out the bad fats and generally trying to eat healthier (although that part wasn't too bad).
I have lost a stone and several inches (3-4) off waist, belly, hips and bust.
Maybe something for you to try?
Good luck, however you decide to try and lose weight.
Btw, I am nearly 49!
