Hi everyone!!! 47, obese, premenopausal, hypothyroid, emotional eater, exhausted, depressed, sad, embarrassed recluse here!!!
I want my slim, sexy, confident me back!!! The weight has crept on over the last few years and the 2019 it has gotten way way out of hand!!!
I work with animals everyday so I have been pretty fit, but these last few months I've just hit a wall. Constant pain, exhausted, I cant even ride my own horse because I'm so overweight. I find myself, going to work, coming home, having dinner and just going to bed. (With snacks) falling asleep, not sleeping well, getting up exhausted!!! I need some help and advice lovely people. Where do I start!????

Hi TJD and welcome to the forum, one of our admins will no doubt do a proper welcome and give you the information you need in the morning, but I just wanted to say hi.
Your post struck a chord with me as I've just been diagnosed as hypothryoid and have often felt the way you describe recently. Have you tried the ThyroidUK forum as well as here, I found them really useful in helping me have conversations with my GP about treatment, I'm only at the start of my treatment journey, but I have learned loads from the people there.
And this forum is simply great, I would recommend having a good look around and reading posts and joining in, I'm hosting the daily diary for today if you want to have a look it's here- healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...
Wishing you lots of luck in your mission, and I hope to see you around on the forum.
Hi TJD. You have started, you came on this forum and opened up, that takes courage. I too am at the start of my journey, but some of the rules I have put in place are "No eating anywhere except the table" cos I too eat in bed watching Netflix, and also to log my intake... I've stopped wearing lace up shoes cos my blubber guts gets in the way trying to tie my laces lol.... Menopause has a lot to answer for.... You've reached out for help, that's a great first step, whatever healthy eating option you choose, it has to be right for you and to strike a chord with you, I for example am trying low carb because I find that works for my lifestyle, so no bread/pasta/rice and because most pkts and canned food is high in carb I find I'm cooking healthy basic food from scratch and feeling full, best of all I can eat my favourite food cheese... An admin will give you pointers about where you can find more information. Best of luck.
If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.
Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:
As Salcheq has suggested, please join the Thyroid UK forum, because if you're not optimally treated, then weight loss will be extremely difficult and a lot of the pain, exhaustion and depression will probably be symptoms of your hypothyroidism healthunlocked.com/thyroiduk
All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.
We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.
Supplements are a great help when cutting back with food and you start exercising, chromium picolinate helps regulate blood sugar and can stop any cravings for sweet things, also minetals calcium magnesium zinc combination will help tremendously with muscles once you start pushing your self to weight train or increase cardio activity. Even L- carnitine will help. Supplements seem to be over looked when people diet and they can really help when we cut back on nutrition, it's what they are designed for, as an extra to supplement a diet. Get online do some research or speak to the staff in a health shop they can guide you. You wont needs loads just a few important ones can make a difference to your energy levels and exercise recovery, especially if your over 40 we tend to need a little extra help.
Welcome! Well you know you can do this. I'm also using a couple of apps to help me. Couch to 5k. Brilliant! A water drinking reminder and also I am sober. To keep me dry through january. I find they keep me on my toes. Good luck x
You have come to the right place for lots of support. You can do this, steady and slowly no quick fix but just keep going, having a bad day ok never mind have another go the next day. Be mindful about what you eat. Healthy eating not processed foods. I started last Feb, was over weight and menopausal, have lost some weight and I do yoga and walk when I can. I feel so much better, still have bad days, holidays etc but when they are over I get back on my healthy eating way of life.
Sounds like you are quite active so go for it you have got this.
Hi, another person I can relate to. ! Just replied to another post on the site, laying my feelings out. We need to do it, we need to support each other. Come on I have 3 stones to loose.....I want that pair of jeans that actually fit and that pretty dress in the summer that just looks fab. I want to want tall, and have a happy face...!
Hi, don't despair! The fact that you have started on your journey shows that you are prepared to change how you feel. Look at yourself differently - you potentially have many happy years of good health ahead of you. I am a similar age to you and want to live my best life every day, despite accepting that I have developed a bit of a disability and it is bloody hard to lose the weight! Despite this, I have found that exercising has made me physically stronger and more coordinated and I am enjoying eating healthily, however slowly the scales are moving (perhaps there is a mechanical issue with them which is stopping them!?) My pain has reduced too and I know that I will never feel exactly the same way as the younger me - but so what? Beauty is how you feel and how you make other people feel, after all. Persevere, be kind to yourself and get back on that horse soon!
Are you thinking of joining a weigh-in? It's brilliant for team support. And the Daily Diary is great for sharing meal plans and pinching ideas. You'll find them both, and more besided, in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...
Hi TJDFolls, I get where you are coming from. 47 is a difficult age, lots of changes going on and there is always that fear of getting older. Comfort eating is often the first thing that happens. Work is exhausting and it is easy to feel a need to reward yourself....and then you feel bad. I have been there. Can you decide to see your glass as half full rather than half empty? You are young still (from where I stand, at 64), and you can turn things around. Are you happy in your job, your relationship, and where you live? Sometimes drastic measures are needed to move us out of the rut we are in. What can you change? Your horse can be a great incentive...or, if you are like me, I now spend time mostly on the ground looking after my two, but still thoroughly enjoy my time spent with them. Best of luck for this new chapter of your life!
