Never really been fussed about my weight. Was always a stick as a kid no matter what I ate never put weight on. Now I'm 17+ stone and can't loose a pound!

I think most of us here can identify with that! I was just lucky I put a lid on it before I reached 17 stone. Apart from a few wrinkles and grey hairs, I now have the same shape and bodyfat distribution that I had when I was 20. I did that just by eating different things.

Kids and teenagers can eat pretty much anything and get away with it; they're growing. A young body can usually find something useful to do with whatever gets thrown at it. Adults, not so much. In particular, they cope very badly with an excess of carbohydrates, and the modern British diet consists of almost nothing else.

What do you eat in an average day? It may be that you need a complete diet overhaul, but there's usually some low-hanging fruit which, if eliminated, will set you on the right path. Soft drinks, breakfast cereals, white bread, snacks, and anything with "low fat" written on the label would be high on my list of things to get rid of.

Thanks for your reply. I'm surprised by the getting rid of anything that says low fat! I tend to go for those things.

I tend to swap bread for a wrap and don't really drink soft drinks anymore.

I use my fitness Pal to monitor my food and usually get in below the daily calorie limit. I guess I need to learn more/ pay more attention to what is actually good to eat!

Ah, that's where most of us have gone wrong :) You'll do best by eating real, whole food, home cooked so you know just what you're eating. Anything labelled low fat has been highly processed to make it at all palatable. You're much better off with the full fat, unadulterated version, and cutting down on the carbs instead.

Diabetes and the other non-communicable diseases "caused" by (refined) carbohydrate usually take decades to become symptomatic... and I think "the rot" started when we were teenagers.

Hi, P0782 , welcome.

If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.

Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:
