OK, I seem to be sticking at 82 kilos at the moment but have lost en extra inch on my waistline. It was 36 inches six or seven weeks ago. It's now 34 inches. I'm OK with that and thrilled with how I look. A size sixteen and sometimes a fourteen. I'm aiming to get down to around eleven and half stone (about 74 kilos?). I'm big bones and well muscled, lifting 40 to 50 kg at the gym which I visit three times a week. HOWEVER I've just been on one site that tells me my ideal weight - even at my age - 70 - should be 62kgs, roughly 9stone 12lbs. To my mind that is absolutely ridiculous. I haven't been that weight since I was eighteen and would have to starve myself to get there. According to the NHS chart 11 and a half stone is at the upper limit of my ideal weight and even then I would still be quite satisfied with 12. Do other people get as put off as I do with these far fetched targets given on some sites?

The ideal weight for you, Goodnessknows, is the weight that you feel healthiest and most comfortable at and no chart is going to be able to tell you that
Thank you for that. I'm quite tall and as I'm not having another pre-diabetes blood check until June, feel that I'll go on as I am and see what weight I end up with. If it's twelve stone that's fine by me.

I am tall, muscular and 70, and BMI (and the chart you find on every doctor's surgery wall) does not apply. You might amuse yourself looking up the history of BMI.
Smart BMI does take age into account, and (at BMI 28) says that I am in the "ideal range"
To determine if you are overfat, you will need to estimate your body-fat percentage - and there are many ways of doing that.

Yes i completely agree with you. Im 95 kg and aim to get to 80 kg. I started at 105kg after having had my three kids. Top end of my healthy bmi is 76kg. I could reach 80 kg and maintain that hut do feel that my bmi range is totally unrealistic. Im more than happy with how i look at 80 kg and am trying to focus on that and not get disheartened by the bmi thing. Good luck x
I definitely get put off by that stuff. I've always been on the heavier side my whole life because I'm rather tall, and well-muscled like you. I'm quite a bit younger (37), but I'm 191 lbs at the moment (86.6 kgs) and most people wouldn't know it to look at me. Right now I'm just aiming for fitting back into some of my really nice clothes, rather than worrying about the numbers on the scale. I think I can safely say it's pretty well established by now that everyone's a bit different, and although many people may fit into the generic average, there are plenty of people who are outliers.
I agree with this, I have a friend who is heavy boned, weighs at least two stone more than me at the same height yet we wear the same size clothes 😊

Well Goodnessknows, I for one am impressed at your weights - that is a very decent weight to be lifting. Why worry about what a spreadsheet says when it is pretty obvious from what you have said that you have an amazing physique. Much better to ask if your blood pressure is ok and heart functioning and you can get up and down stairs without getting out of breath (and plenty of people can't). Absolutely well done on your exercise regime. I am 54 and hope I can do what you're doing when I am 70.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, pretty much all professional rugby players are classed as obese if you just look at their BMI figures. As long as you feel good, that's all that counts.
I completely agree with others comments - it's the weight you feel the most comfortable at - the BMI chart does not take in to account your age, build etc. When I started this again I decided I wanted to be in the middle of my BMI - this would make me 8 stone 7lbs (I am a shortie) but I am 9 stone 3.5lbs now and I would actually be skin and bone if I tried to get to that! How you feel in yourself and healthy you feel is the most important thing
