I have gone through terrible depression since my partner died but I desperately need & want to lose weight but I don’t cook so don’t know where to start. I will add a photo as soon as I can get help to do this as I am having difficulty downloading any photos.

Good morning RoisinDearg and welcome back to the forum,

I am sending my condolences to you and am so sorry that you have had to go through all that you have. It is not surprising that you are feeling depressed. I hope that by joining in here and getting to know some of us that we will be able to give you a lift. We are a friendly, supportive bunch so get as involved as you can :) Take a look here, to see all that we have to offer - healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Why not start off by joining in with the weigh in today - here is the link - healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

There are plenty of recipes on line with instructions of how to cook, so I would get started by researching some of those. I particularly like DietDoctor, this is more for people that are lowering Carbs and upping fat - a great way to lose weight. You could also go to your local library and borrow some recipe books, The Hairy Bikers do some lovely ones.

To make navigating the forum easier, we’ve put all the information you’ll need in a Newbie pack and here’s the link

Please take the time to read it carefully, so that you can enjoy all that we have to offer.

Hello RoisinDearg (lovely name :) ) and welcome back.

I'm sorry you have had such a difficult time with the illness and death of your partner. It must be very hard to lift your head up and move forward. I hope, with our support, you'll be able to make the changes you need for your health and wellbeing.

Everyone who cooks started somewhere. One of the things I've had time to reflect on in my 14 months here is how we define and pigeonhole ourselves. "I can't do that". "I don't like this". "I never go there". Once we pick away at those things, we can see ourselves in a new light and grow in confidence.

I'm not of the school that thinks we can all do everything, but I do think we all have reserves in ourselves that don't get tapped and we waste a lot of our potential so, from my advanced age (67), I'm trying to do something about that. I hope you will, too :)

By the way, be very careful about posting photographs and take note of what lucigret has said about locking your posts.

Fáilte Roisin! I'm so sorry for your loss. You've been through a difficult time. It will take time to adjust but you are taking the first steps.

Cooking could be an enjoyable pastime. Learning to cook one meal a week might be a plan. There are lots of YouTube videos... I'm thinking of the Happy pear but there are lots of step by step guides.

Wishing you all the best 😍

Hello RoisinDearg

I sympathize with your position and please accept my condolences, you have made a great start by wanting to loose weight this is a great site because as you encounter a problem there is unlimited help available with some very professional people. When you say you cannot cook, can you boil an egg and carry out basics tasks? If you can do the basics and with the pc look at nhs.uk/change4life/recipes it will give you healthy choices and it is not difficult. You must remain positive and keep your chin up.

Hi, RoisinDearg , Welcome, and condolences.

My late wife (a non-smoker) was diagnosed with lung cancer four years ago, and died two years ago... and I was depressed and put on weight, and joined this group six months ago.

I "don't cook" (unless you count heating stuff up in the microwave)... but I am fortunate that I can get OAP/dieter meals every day of the week within walking distance. Age Concern (AgeUK) do meals two or three times a week,

and the local pubs do small-plate OAP/dieter meals.

Are you "out in the sticks" or can you walk/get to places to eat?

There are organisations like Parsley Box and Apetito that do meals and will deliver regularly... but there are a lot of recipes on this site.

Where does the name "Dearg" come from? There are two mountains called Carn Dearg where I used to go at BraeRoy in Scotland.

That's the thing though never think you are exempt from things like lung cancer because you don't smoke as I have learned that it can affect anyone with lungs and these conditions don't discriminate.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss and its all so unfair isn't it?

Unfortunately, we have to play the hand we get dealt.

That's it when I was ill last year I could have easily decided that the damage had been done and that there was no point to anything but I didn't and lots of good things came out of what I had experienced as it made me reevaluate my life into what's important and what isn't and how its our behaviour towards these blows that we can do something about as we can't control everything that happens to us in life.

Recently an ex colleague of mine died from lung cancer aged only 54 and its just another example of how life is so unfair!
