Hi and welcome, SFR1 :)

I think the trick is to stop dieting and to embark on lifestyle changes that are sustainable. I was a yoyo dieter before arriving here and here's some of my story, if you're interested healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Hi, SFR1 , Welcome

Are the diets not working, or are you lacking the motivation and discipline to keep to them?

Hi and welcome SFR1. I can understand exactly where you're coming from. I've been successful at weight watchers until I hit an unmovable wall. I lost 3 stone on the pro points plan in quite a short period of time then they changed the allowances and I stopped losing. I was told maybe you're eating too much so I ate less. No change. Maybe you're not eating enough so I increased my points. I gained. In the end I left. I joined slimming world and lost 1lb in 3 months! Years later I bought slimming world books from eBay and followed the "green plan" and lost a stone very quickly so was coaxed back to joining slimming world. Much to my disappointment, it was extra easy and gone was the second healthy b if you were vegetarian. Initially I lost weight and then it stopped. The consultant kind of embarrassed me at the meeting when she spoke of the food pictures on Facebook. "I look at all these pictures girls and I think where's all your speed and then there's Alison! Where are your carbs girl. You must eat your pasta, you must eat your potatoes!" Needless to say I didn't go back to her! I joined this site under a different username and finally learnt to actually enjoy fats again and I started to lose weight again. I felt much better in myself. Unfortunately I had a few problems at home and life got in the way. Being unhappy with my lot I rejoined slimming world and on my first week managed to consume 87 syns on a night out. I was mortified! In the end I left. The consultant was persistent and messaged me constantly, put cards through my letterbox and in the end I thought maybe if I've got to answer to someone I'll stick to the plan. Week 1 I lost 7lb, obviously most of it is fluid. I craved macaroni cheese, I wanted fat! Week 2 I'm away at Mum's and looked in the fridge and thought where's the speed food! I'm using up all my syns on normal food because they're not on the free food list! A realisation dawned on me! Slimming world is not a diet it's a way of life but doesn't seem to allow for everyday life. I thought enough is enough and signed up to NHS weight loss programme again but under a new username as I couldn't remember my details. There is so much to learn from like-minded people. Best move I made. I would advise to post in the daily diary which will help in meal planning. This is coming from someone who always stuck their head in the fridge to see what to eat.

Here's to the new you and actually learning to eat properly again x

you said you learned to enjoy fats again - are you using the NHS 12 week plan as a framework but adopting Low Carb High Fat way of life?

in reply tocheritorrox

Not quite. I've always eaten a low fat diet. Everything was virtually fat free. Fat free yogurt, fat free cottage cheese but I'm learning that fat isn't a bad word and helps keep you fuller longer. Regarding carbohydrates, I am reducing them and eat wholegrain as opposed to processed carbs. Following a predominantly vegetarian diet a lot of my protein is from plant sources and obviously contain carbohydrates as well as protein. I have stopped eating refined sugar as much as possible. I have struggled with my weight for decades so obviously low fat diets haven't worked for me so in light of research I am trying to reduce my carbohydrates, increase my protein and eat unsaturated fat.

sounds like you've thought this through and come up with a plan! Bet it works - especially with cheering on from everyone here.

I’ve been ‘dieting’ for 45 years 🤣 not funny really! Mainly WW but also slimming world. Am now trying calorie deficit and coming here. I love reading up all the tips - I just fail at weekends. Healthy eating is my plan - good luck! 👌🏻

in reply toRealthing

I can understand that Realthing. I've struggled for 30:years and been members of ww and sw. I have in the past put my intake on both ww and my fitness Pal just to keep an eye on the calories. Just in case I was overeating, my average intake was 900 calories. I was shocked and thought no wonder I was hungry. With sw, my intake was around 1400 calories but for someone with a BMI of 39, that's a bit low. If you check your BMI on the NHS website you are given a calorie range to aim for weight loss. Mine is 1644-2114. I've been undereating for decades aside from the binges. This site previously helped me learn to enjoy food, not be afraid to eat and that fat is not bad. I hope this is the way forward for you. I wish you all the best x

Hi,

Welcome! Hope you find the missing piece of the Jigsaw Puzzle here.

Let me add my suggestions,

1. The way we see the problem, is the problem.

2. The problem here is not Weight.

3. The problem is the Habits that lead to the weight.

4. There is too much focus on 'Weight Loss' without trying to fix the root problem - Excessive eating/calories.

5. If you just change your language a bit, so instead of saying 'I want to lose weight'... you could say.. 'I want to lose the Habits, that lead to excessive weight'

6. 'I want to change my habits.'

7. 'I will change my habits, please help me.'

So before you pop any food into the mouth, ask a few questions.

- Does my body need this

- Is it going to help me or harm me

- Am I becoming healthy or unhealthy due to this piece

- Am i eating out of need or out of boredom

You could also ask

+ What can I do to become fitter?

+ What can I do to become healthier?

Ultimately its the Battle of the Mind. You need to address that part first and change course there. Just diet charts x, or y or z will not work unless the Boss ( Brain) up there wants to change.

You need to dig deep, take help, support, momentum to win the Battle of the Mind and then you will win the battle of the bulge.

All the best! :)

I agree with the above that you need determination but it does get easier as your new lifestyle becomes a habit - especially with loads of support and advice from here.

Personally I was losing weight counting calories, cutting out junk and beer and avoiding fat. I switched to Low Carb High Fat a few weeks ago in the face of - to me - overwhelming evidence that it's healthier. I'm still losing weight (not much to go now) but don't feel as though it's a Diet. My biggest challenge will be when I give up smoking (SOON!) but I actually feel reasonably confident that the problems will be psychological rather than weight gain (OK I dont know that til I try!)

I'll be surprised if reading the stuff moreless supplied doesn't convince you that this could be the change of lifestyle you need - but best of luck whatever you decide!

I smoked 15-20 a day from age 15, for the best part of 20 years, with small periods of not smoking (eg trying to conceive, pregnancy, breastfeeding) and thought I’d never manage to stop. I was so sceptical of ecigs, but after another failed attempt at stopping I thought, why not try them?

I was stunned at how little I craved cigarettes- it was only ever a nicotine addiction. Used an ecig for 18 months with nicotine in, then bit the bullet and switched to a no-nicotine one to wean myself off, which only took a few weeks.

Now I’m free!!!!!!!!!!

(I still eat biscuits though)

Thanks. I've got one but not got round to giving it a whirl yet. I did give up for 46 weeks 2 years ago (want to know the hours and minutes?!) but made that usual mistake of thinking I could have an odd one ... I've joined the no smoking community on HU but explained I'll "go & see" them when I get started - hope it will be a helpful as this one is for weight loss.

I have had similar experiences too. But lets not get bogged down by the past ,I think its useful to know what does not work so we do not try it again. I am presently just trying to stay within 1200 calories a day and that is okay till now.I can manage some days within 1000 calories other days i can go a bit over ,but averaging 1200 generally.

what are you doing ?
