Welcome and good luck- I followed the NHS 12 week weight loss plan- I used the generic calorie allowance which I found ok and only rarely ate over the 1400 allowance. However if you think that would be too low then use the BMI calculator to see what the lower and upper range of calorie allowance is for you. Aim for mid to upper range allowance and check regularly as you loose weight. I like calorie counting because it gives me flexibility- I am a pesce-vegetarian and often find other diets difficult to fit around my dietary requirements- also it means I can have a 'naughty' treat occasionally as long as its part of my allowance for the day. Because there hasn't been much of a change in what I eat I can believe I am not on a diet and to be honest the calorie counting can be used for both weight loss and maintaining, since I have just increased my calorie allowance so I no longer loose weight, but don't start putting it back on- which I have done in the passed when I stopped calorie counting once I reached my target weight. Its picking something that fits in with your lifestyle and that you will be able to maintain in the long term. Good luck
Mostly said below about diet changes and stuff. In terms of exercise joining a team sport/group class is a good idea or if you prefer solo exercise - the NHS C25K app is a good starter for building towards 5km runs. 2-3 5km runs a week should make you drop weight like crazy.
