I found out today that my friend, who is only one dress size smaller than me, is a whopping 4 stone lighter! I know muscle weighs more than fat, and I'm definitely more muscular than her, but could that account for all the extra weight? Is there anything else that could be causing such a disparity? This information has got me doubting my self image and my goal weight.

Weight disparity
I have the same issue. A good friend of mine actually wears a lot of clothes in a size bigger than me but weighs 2 stones less!! The difference between us is that she carries all her weight round her hips while I carry mine all over. 😊
I have the same thing too - my sister is one dress size smaller and 3 stone lighter than me. I wouldn’t worry about it too much - as long as the number goes down (long term, I mean) then it doesn’t really matter what the actual number is. My target is 10 stones. But that’s a number just pulled from thin air really. I know that according to my BMI, I was obese when I was a size 12. I remember a nurse calculating it and looking at me sideways and saying “yes, well clearly that’s rubbish, isn’t it”. So I figure I’ll keep losing weight until I’m a clothes size 10-12, which for my height is something I’d be really happy with, and I’ll get my visceral fat down to where I’m happy, and then I’ll maintain. Don’t doubt your target, maybe just keep it as just that - a target.

I see you have had a couple of replies already with suggestions. I'm awaremuscle is heavier than fat, but body shape has a lot to answer for along with height.

Hi CatMS , it's all a bit of a mystery to me, too. I'm frequently cheesed off by hearing of people who are a stone or more heavier than me and two dress sizes smaller. But I remember in my 20s when I was around 10stone, I was rarely less than a 14 (for some tops). I don't expect any miracles when I get to a healthy BMI but I know I'll look so much better than I did - I already do, though I haven't gone down a size, despite losing a stone and a half. In my case, it certainly isn't muscle that's responsible
Dont forget that manufacturers dress sizing has changed. Thirty years ago I was 10st, wore size 14 and measured 36" bust 26"waist 38" hip.
Today I'm 35 -29 -39 even though half a stone lighter, and I wear size 12 ( sometimes 10) . At my age though I guess this is partly due to muscle loss.....sigh...
Thank you for that reminder, you're right. Comparison's over time are pointless but it does still niggle me that people a couple of stones heavier are a size smaller. It all comes down to the distribution of those stones I'm afraid, and until some of it starts moving from around my middle, there'll be no change in sight
