Good afternoon, I’m 20 years old and I am seriously over weight and I need help to change that. My curent weight is 272 and my weight goal is 170. I have tried many diets and gyms but I guess I never stick long enough to see results in the past years my lowest weight was 240.
The reason why I gain weight easily is that I eat my emotions out. So when I’m down I eat which I need help changing. Also I feel like my weight stops me from being myself I have a few friends and I feel if I was skinnier I would have more friends and enjoy more.
Please help me find diets or routines that can help me

It sounds like you are stuck in a bit or a rut. You might have few friends but they might be worth 100 acquaintances! Everyone struggles with something. One thing at the time. Start slow. Try and cut out one snack or one particular thing that you eat in the day. Once you have managed this for couple of weeks then go for a second. Trying to change everything in one go can be overwhelming and is less likely to work long term. Sometimes change in a little habit can be like a domino effect - you get massive shift. Be kind to yourself and don’t beat yourself up over failures. You can do it!
I like this advice. First I gave up the chocolate caramel tart I ate everyday with my lunch at work. I stopped buying them. Once I had nailed that I gave up chocolate. I had given up a few things before I started on the 12 week plan.
First of all, to help you find your way around, and enjoy all the things we have on offer, please read the Welcome Newbies Post here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...
Take your time to read it carefully as it has lots of information.
You are not alone in battling weight loss and gains, but with sensible eating and not depriving yourself you can succeed, many of us have. If you are following the NHS 12 Week plan please note that the 1400 calorie target suggested is a generic amount, so please check your own personal calorie target on the NHS BMI checker, it’s often higher than you think. We always advise starting towards the top of the range, being hungry is the single biggest cause of weight loss failure.
I also highly recomend coming onto the forum regularly, daily if you can, reading posts and replying to others. Being part of a community is proven to help weight loss

By the way, it would be interesting to know how you found your way to this forum
You seem to have a good understanding of what’s not working. You mention not sticking it long enough to see results and also that you eat your emotions out. That’s a great couple of steps right there. Some amazing guys on here will never give up on you, so stay with this place, keep working and you will get there. Obviously it’s a long road, I was 320 at one point and it took me about 5 years to deal with my demons and get the weight off slow and steady.
I found, and still do, that meditation helped me control the emotions and stop eating for comfort. Recently I’ve beaten nicotine the same way. Don’t know if you’ve tried it, if not it’s worth trying.
Here you will meet many friends, who will catch you when you fall and cheer you on when you fly. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s a journey you can complete.
Do you have any interests or hobbies? Could you use these as distractions from comfort eating? Go for a short walk, do some knitting, sing a song, have a little dance or write a poem or jot a line about how you feel and what you want to change and how you feel / think you can do it?
On the forum, have a good slow read of the newbie post - I call it the sat-nav to the forum benefits..
Have a wonder around the daily diary in events as many of us are on different types of weight loss plans.. We all respect your freedom to choose your route..
Enjoy the forum and join in as much as your able to get the best from it..
hello and welcome Bee98 the journey starts with the first step and just say to yourself that this time if you slip up, you will get back on the horse again straight away. Any improvements are better than none and things will look up and you will get there.
Try to substitute non food comfort treats when feeling down, bubble bath, face mask, massage, dancing to your favourite music and so on. And come on here to see what is happening and encourage each other
Hi bee it’s great you have found your way here it’s really supportive and encourages you into sensible eating as I am a couch potato I have found I can shift the weight with a walk every morning and I have a long way to go coz I’m nineteen stone but iv lost another half stone being here for a few weeks all the best of luck xx
Ive heard it takes 90 days for something you do to become a habit/lifestyle. So why not try one thing at a time like the earlier replies mention. Just cut out buying the snacks so that theyre not available to you at home. I found that the VGB app helped me initially & also helped me to sleep! The YMCA near me offer a 12 week weight loss management coursr and a 12 week physical activity course - this enables you to go swimming and use the gym at certain times & is completely free - why not see if you have this available in your area! It os for pepple that need to lose weight and get more active so you will meet new people and theyll be likeminded ! Theres a facebook page called Your Move and they have different ones for different areas and im sure they provide links for activities etc
Theres other apps out there that can help
You with activity such as the C25K or Fitbit - or similar things, you can add friends and compete with them !, myfitness pal - this helps count your calories. I use these everyday
You say you eat more when emotional - why not DO something rather than eat like go for a walk as it takes about 20 mins for a craving to leave so make yourself busy for 20mins !
I also found that wearing a sweet perfume or using a vanila oil on my wrists - because i could smell the sweetness i really didnt want to eat anything sweet
You CAN do it if you make it a lifestyle & you already know youre trigger
Hello Darling, just look at all this wonderful advice! This is a very special site because bods are usually unfailingly positive in the their support but also the advice they give is top-hole. There's not much I can add to all this wisdom but here's a smidgin of an idea from Old Betty:
Start by looking at your meals one by one. Start with breakfast. Nowadays this is often the most neglected meal because most of us buzz awf to work with the speed of blue-arsed flies. But stop, please consider: what are you putting in that precious bod of yours with which to start the day? Start by taking a slow toddle along the breakfast aisle of your local supermarket - strictly window shopping. Read a few of the small-print confessions which lurk behind the kindergarten packet colours. This aisle is a sky-high, multi-coloured cathedral to sugar and sugar products.
Instead, try a really good large porridge oat - a bowl full - raw. Now add a light handful of sunflower seeds, a few walnuts or pecans or the like (unsalted!), then dash in a few blueberries, strawberries and/or raspberries (they're not cheap but a few will do). Bought mueslis are often awash with sugary dried fruit, more added sugar and salt, but if you make up your own mix you will find that many of these things are naturally sweet enough. Now add a semi-skimmed or skimmed milk and stir to soften the oats. Making up your own blend of the dry goods in a container saves time and gives YOU control over exactly what you are eating. The oats contain slow-burning carbs so will give you plenty of energy for the morning ahead and you should be able to avoid that naughty snack mid-morning. Might take a little while to adjust to this start to the day but I promise you it's worthwhile and the mix will give you the energy to stay active.
All Good luck, and remember, this is a worthy marathon and not a sprint! love Betty
Hi Bee98! I don't have any advice but just wanted to say that you're not alone - this forum is amazing and full of fabulous people to support us and cheer us on.
Come here for advice and do weigh in each week if you feel comfortable to. Losing weight isn't easy, but if I've learned anything from this forum, it is that weight loss is possible! Others have done it and so can we.
