Afraid of failing

I just looked at the bmi checker and found out to be healthy range need to lose 8.4 stone. The enormity of this has thrown me and I just don’t know where to start. I think it is the reality of actually seeing the amount in black and white and now I’m worried about starting because I know I will fail

danielle98 , like I've just said to the original poster, the big number can be just so offputting it's much more manageable to chip away at it one mini-target at a time. Sounds as though you're taking that approach, and it will be great to hear how you're going, through the easy times and the difficult ones :)

Good luck

hi Danielle! how is it going? I am worried as Christmas is coming up and all we do is eat! how are you handling it? I am using a small plate for myself and a bite of what I like the most, eating slowly and stopping before I think I am full. it seems to be working so far. what are you doing?

i’ve upped my calories abit after some advice on this forum, i weighed myself today (a day early i couldn’t wait) and i have apparently lost 2lbs!! i haven’t had any major cravings yet and i’m not feeling as hungry as i used to all the time so i think it’s going good ☺️

YAY! see, that is the attitude to have! remember, we did not gain this weight over night and will not lose it that way. anyway, if I lost a lot of weight at once, I would have extra skin and gross!

no i don’t want loose skin left over either!!so would much rather loose it slowly so i can’t put it back on as quick either

Don't concentrate on the big number as its too much to take in and BMI does not fit all shapes and sizes anyway !!... set yourself a mini goals of say 11lbs... then you will have 7.5st to lose... then when you've done that set 7lbs...and keep going... before you know it you will only have 7st to lose..then 6 1/2 st etc 😁.

& remember its not all about what the scales either its how you feel inside & how your clothes feel that are better indications of success..

YOU can do this 😁

Hello and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum Cazturner

Firstly, our weight is just number, it does not define who you are, a wonderful warm human being. 😊

Secondly, being healthier and fitter is not just about the number on the scales. It is about food quality, movement and having control of our lifestyle. I was advised to start with losing 5% of my body weight, and then 10%, which has been proven to radically improve health 😊

So please don’t let the numbers distract you from the main purpose of the journey.

Wishing you all the best

Anna

Don't think about the 8 st and start by breaking it down and losing 7lb in a month :)

There are a few people on here that have lost 8st and more by following the 12 week NHS plan - which is a healthy way of eating and this is for life and not looked on as a diet :)

Make sure you check the calorie range that the BMI calculator gave you and start to eat at mid to high of that range as you lose weight you will need to reduce it :) I found that I started at the lower range and didnt lose after advice on here ate mid to high range and couldn't believe I started to lose weight :)

Remember you are doing this for you and we are here to support you on your journey :)

C;mon you can do this - wishing you all the best :)

Cazturner , you've got so much support here and I agree with everyone - just shelve all thoughts of that big number and start working on moving downwards. You'll get such satisfaction from your first half stone (and you'll get a badge :) ) that it will spur you on to your next mini goal and so on.

Don't let the big number get you down. Give it a go, you'll find you can do better than you think.

Cazturner please don't feel despondent. You know what the big picture is. Now break it down in to small bite sized goals that you can achieve and before you know it you will be working your way down to your target. I still have around 5 stone to loose, I have lost 1 1/2 over a two year period (I am terribly slow). I am 15 stone now and my next target is to get into the 14's, then I will want to see 14 7 and then I will review again. I may get to 12 stone and decide I am happy with that and may never reach my recommended weight, but I am fine with that. The bigger picture can be very demoralising and seem an eternity away. Just start making small changes to start with, make sure you eat enough and keep coming here for loads of support and join a weigh in for even more support. You can do this, just remember it is not a race and must be sustainable for you.

Wishing you good luck :)

Hi there and welcome. I spent years putting off losing weight as I had so much to lose and I was scared by the numbers. Once I started it was fine, just take it in 7 lb steps with a non food reward for each half stone loss. I have to admit that I kick myself for not having done it sooner! Anna is also right when she says that our weight is just a number and not who we are. I still have a way to go as my BMI is still around 31 and will set new targets in 2018. Good luck with it and shout if you have any questions. James

Cazturner I think we are so used to relatively instant gratification that it's hard to tackle a long term project like weight loss. I started drawing a couple of years ago at 47 and was frustrated with how bad I was, but I thought in a few years time I'll be a person who has been drawing for for a few years and no longer a novice but if I don't start I'll always be a novice. In the same way with weight, if I don't start my journey I'll always be this weight or heavier, but if I can just start with baby steps, then one day I will be a lighter, healthier person. As the others have said, set yourself smaller goals on the path to the main goal. Good luck!

Thank you all. I am going to start with trying to lose 7lbs by the end of December. I am going to start with a week of cutting out all sugar and only have a certain amount of carbs it’s worked before so can work again as long as I stay focussed

That is an excellent objective Cazturner 😊

Good luck!

Good stuff, you've got a plan, Cazturner , and you've reminded yourself what worked before. It's not the easiest time of year but better to start tackling it than add a few extra pounds. Keep in touch with the forum and let us know how it's going :)

Just make a goal of a little at a time. It will all add up. Set yourself some goals other than a number, like new clothes or smaller ones that you already have. You can do this!!

you will not fail if you have the right mindset to start with darling I promise. I looked at mine like that and immediately ate a ton of bad stuff. what I do now is try to lose 1 or 2 pounds a week. I still have a long long way to go but at 1 or 2 pounds a week, I am doing it. this is a way of life and not a diet, if you look at it like that it is easier. losing weight is hard.. remember every thing you do right is a step in the right direction. don't give up!!
