Hello, I am very overweight and cannot lose weight and keep it off, I have done the diets to death, but as soon as stop attending I gain it all back, I hate the way I look and I feel like I embarrass my lovely partner and my grown children when we are out, I make fun of it and call myself fat bloke or porkpie on legs, but really I want to be normal, I am 5' 9" and over 23 stone now, I can hardly walk when I get up in the morning and my health is suffering too, I will not go swimming to get fit as I look terrible in just shorts, any advise or help welcome, thanks for reading my ramblings

Hi and welcome to the community!! Try some walking to start off with. Soo you'll feel better and maybe be able to swim. Good luck to you on your journey!!

Martin, you can do this with us. Our “club” costs nothing, you can dip in and out whenever you like, and there is always someone around to support you when the going is tough, and to celebrate when you eventually get to where you want to be, (and I promise you, you can do it).

There is no quick fix, it might take a while, but when one of the admin team replies with info on how to get started, then make sure you spend some time getting to grips with the forum, with the NHS 12 week plan and work out how many calories you need for weight loss. It may be a lot more than you think! We don’t belive in starving to lose weight, we believe in eating well. And exercise is not vital for weight loss. There are people on here with various disabilities who can’t exercise, but they have still lost weight with portion control and careful control of calorie intake.

Your post sounded so sad. I really hope you will stay with us, work with us and make your loving family proud of you.

Welcome to this wonderful forum martin6654 . You have had some great replies already so all that is left for me to add is set small targets and look at this as a healthy eating plan that you can sustain rather than another 'diet' which we know don't work. Don't try and change everthing at once, one step at a time to new habits. It's a healthy journey not a race.

First of all I am sure you do not embarrass your family, they love you no matter what. Secondly, stop making "fun of it". I am sure you wouldn't do it to someone else so why do it to yourself (I did there very same thing until someone point that out to me).

This forum is not like any other "diet" organization. (The main principle of these diet companies, in my opinion, is to make money and nothing else. I also think the diets keep us in the vicious circle of having a poor relationship with food, that is also just my opinion). You will get the support and encouragement you need here and the only cost is losing weight. You will also improve your relationship with food. It won't be easy and motivation will fluctuate but we are here to help you along the way.

Please do not be put off by the amount of weight you have to lose, take it in small amounts. My mantra is one day at time, one meal at a time. When it comes to reprogramming your brain to a healthy lifestyle, it is best not to look at the bigger picture.

Take it one day at a time, one meal at a time and become a regular on here. It helps to keep the focus. Good luck and well done for making a start.

martin6654 welcome to this forum. Please don't give up and feel free to go swimming it really doesn't matter what people think or say. You are doing it to become healthier after all.

Be honest with yourself about what you eat. Write it all down. Tick off what you can and should do without. That will be a good start. I was shocked about the number of calories what slipped into my system when I started to count everything. ( secret eaters program opened my eyes). Good luck ;)

Welcome Martin - please don't feel that you can't go swimming - at the pool I go to there are many larger people who chose swimming as their exercise of choice as it is so much kinder to the joints. No one will be thinking badly of you - quite the reverse in fact. You can feel proud for biting the bullet and taking control of your life - well done!

Hi, Martin, not much to add to the above, we are a friendly lot and no-one will judge you. This is not something you do ‘until’ you are the weight you want, it is a ‘life time’ journey so it is important to find something that fits you and your tastes.

Try your library for recipe/diet books or charity shops. Watch out as some have recipes that are gross others have ‘normal’ meals but instead of ‘serves 4’ they have ‘serves 6’.

Start your meal with a low cal. Soup and no bread or a salad, try a balsamic dressing, add fruit. Grate carrot and apple.

Most people agree that it helps if you prep. The next days food and put it in containers so that it removes the temptation to just eat what you usually eat.

Remember that you didn’t suddenly walk, or read etc. There were lots of stumbling and set backs along the way and so it is with changing your eating etc. The important thing is to learn why you tripped up, dust yourself of, forgive yourself and carry on.

Enjoy the journey, embrace it.
