Major Sweet Tooth

I am 15 stone, and ideally should be 12 or 12and a half stone. I am broad shouldered and muscular but I have gained a lot of weight around my middle since returning to full time employment. My main down falls are my sweet tooth and eating in the evenings . Any hints to curb my sweet tooth are very welcome. My main meals are healthy, porridge and fruit for breakfast, Meat/fish/poultry steamed spuds and veg for dinner (middle of the day I am a countrywoman), but in the evening I go to pot and graze all around me.

Hi, I find that having a couple of dates helps if I need something sweet. I love chocolate and haribos but 2 dates gets rid of any cravings quite quickly.

Are you able to fit some exercise into your day?

Yes, I eat dates too. Just the three a day, because they’ are full of sugar. But, they are actually very good for you, with a lot of good vitamins and minerals contained within them. They are also full of fibre and said to be good for the heart! I really like the medjool ones; not cheap, but wonderfully sweet and better for me than a bar of chocolate!

Yes, but for me, the benefits outweigh that. I’ve lost seven stone over 10 months eating around 1800 Calories daily, with three dates and apricots on most of those days. With exercise, which for my arthritis and angina, is moderate at the very best, it works for me. I enjoy them and I’d rather my sweet tooth which almost cost me my life, was put to good use 😊 I am an addict when it comes to chocolate so it’s been a steep battle on that front. They have many benefits and for me, well I love them.

Thank you Concerned, that is very good advice, does this mean I am borderline diabetic. I was worried about my blood sugar levels, and I had them checked, they are OK, but I definately eat too much sweet stuff. I certainly do want to go down the road of type 2 diabeties

3 dates a day is a nutritionally better choice than a bar of dark chocolate, even though the dark chocolate would have a lower glycaemic index than the dates.

I have had a full blood count and have equipment here which measures my visceral fat at 10. My cholesterol is 4 and enzyme function all in good shape. This is all backed up by medical investigation. Since my light bulb moment with weight problems, I am very careful about what I eat and have sought advice from my GP and dietician. All that I gave up and all that I eat now, have been given the green light. My arthritis stems from years of parachuting ! My angina is a result of being a twerp before I dieted. Lots of good comes from dates and for me, it’s better than half a pound of Galaxy! 😂

I completely agree regarding the risks of consuming too many high GI foods and the implications this can have on an individuals health profile. It is a huge area where ditary adjustments need to be addressed. However dates, although high GI are very nutritious which should not be overlooked. They contain fibre, potassium, iron, magnesium and B6. Plus If they are consumed after a meal then this would lower the overall glycaemic effect.

For me they take the edge off needing something sweet. All in moderation of course 😊
